"I needed to get all carpets deep cleaned and treated with "scotchguard" as requested by folks buying my house. Al returned my call very quickly, scheduled service promptly, and completed service as promised. I never met Al, as I had already moved from the area, but from talking to him on the phone he is professional, energetic, focused, thorough, and eager to perform the work requested. He takes the phone call AND does the work. No issues that the person who talks to the customer is not the person sent to do the job--in that situation the person who does the work may not be motivated to do the work, a problem I have encountered with other companies. I am writing this review a bit late as I moved 3 times in less than a year, and had other priorities! My evaluation and recommendation are the same as when the work was done. Al did a couple of extra things at no additional cost when he performed the contracted work. I am not sure how long Al has been in business but in my opinion he is doing all the right things. I would use his service again and give him the highest rating possible. (Location for where work was performed is my new address. I am unable to change that in the entry for where the work was performed. Work was done in Mandeville, LA.)"

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

You should consider the time needed to clean and prepare your bedroom set for transit. A few days before moving, vacuum, dust, and clean your furniture with a mild cleaning solution. Depending on the movers and the services you pick, you might need to pre-pack the mattress and box spring in boxes designed for beds and disassemble some furniture by removing doors and hardware. Finally, don’t forget to take plenty of pictures documenting the pre-move condition in case you need to file a claim.

Upholstering allows personalization, extends furniture life, conserves resources, refreshes decor, and often costs less than buying new pieces.

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done

When deciding whether to repair, reupholster, or replace old furniture, consider its age, quality, level of wear, and overall value, including sentimental attachment. In many cases, it is more affordable to reupholster or repair furniture than to replace it, especially for antique, vintage, or discontinued pieces.

Older furniture is often made from durable hardwoods like oak and maple, giving it a longer lifespan than newer furniture, which frequently uses lower-quality materials such as plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Because of this, repairing or reupholstering a well-made older piece is often a worthwhile investment.

To determine the best course of action from a financial perspective, compare quotes from local furniture repair services with the price of a new, similar piece. Reupholstery may not be cost-effective for furniture that was originally inexpensive (e.g., under $300). For high-quality or sentimental items, however, it is an excellent way to preserve the piece and extend its life. If you're unsure, a furniture reupholstery specialist can help you evaluate the piece and make an informed decision.

Reupholstering is often worthwhile for high-quality, antique, or sentimental couches, especially if the frame is sturdy. It can cost less than buying a comparable new piece and allows for customization, but may not be cost-effective for low-end furniture.
