"My dryer was taking 2 cycles to dry any loads of laundry and it had been this way for at least the last couple of years. We've replaced the heating element 3x and I was at my wits end. I wasn't sure if purchasing a new dryer or replacing the vent from my existing 3and quot; pipe to a 4and quot; pipe would fix the issue. I called and left a message with some questions. Ken returned my call the same day. We discussed options and scheduled to have him come out 2 days later, Saturday morning. Ken called about 20 minutes before my scheduled appointment to let me know he was on his way and arrived promptly at 10am and got to work. I had had an A/C vent cleaning service clean the vent about 12 months ago and they pulled out quite a bit of lint from the vent, but it appeared they didn't go all the way up to the roof. Ken thoroughly cleaned the vent from top to bottom and pulled out over a cubic foot of lint. My dryer dried a load of laundry for the first time in years in one cycle. I couldn't be more pleased. I will definitely be having Ken come out annually to ensure our dryer vent is clear.

Dryer Vent Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Conducting quick dryer maintenance can extend its lifespan. Help your dryer stay in mint condition by cleaning the lint trap before and after every cycle. This keeps leftover lint from accumulating in your dryer vent, which is one of the leading causes of household fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

You can also wipe down the lint screen with dish soap every few months to keep it extra clean. A basic wipedown of the drum every few months and a deep clean of the exhaust vent once a year are beneficial, too.

Dryer vent cleaning costs around $150 on average, and most homeowners pay between $75 and $350 for the service. There are a few factors that affect your pricing, including the following:

  • Length of the dryer vent

  • Whether the vent is rigid or flexible

  • Accessibility of your dryer vent

  • Amount of lint needed to remove from the vent

According to the Department of Energy, around 15,000 house fires are started every year from clogged dryer vents. It might seem expensive, but dryer vent cleaning can help you avoid severe house fires, injury, and even death.

Yes, mold can grow in a wet dryer vent. Mold is a type of fungi, and fungi thrive in warm, moist conditions. Dryer vents need to be aired out so heat can escape and moisture can dry. If your dryer vents aren’t properly vented, the trapped heat and moisture will cause mold to grow, and the mold can spread to the dryer and even your clothes. Not only can this leave a musty smell on your freshly laundered clothes, but—more importantly—it also poses a health risk.

Using less toilet paper is the easiest way to prevent future clogs. Also, avoid flushing sanitary products, thick paper towels, or hair down the toilet. If you’ve been using a brick in the tank to reduce the water used to flush the toilet, take it out immediately. Bricks will eventually fall apart and clog your toilet drain. Keeping your toilet lid closed also helps avoid future clogs.

Yes, you can snake a roof vent. This is one of the best ways to clear a problematic clog in a plumbing vent. You can either snake the vent by climbing on the roof and sending the plumber’s snake or auger directly down the vent opening, or you can cut a hole in the vent from inside the attic and snake it from there.
