"The guy was nice enough, but the work was scheduled for Friday, June 13 at 8 am; he did not show up until 9 am. He stopped working around 3 pm and said he would come back at 9 am on Saturday; he didn?t arrive until about noon. A storm came up at 2 pm, stopping his work. He waited for a while then said he would come back on Monday. He also left materials and tools on my lawn, which I had to move on Sunday so that I could cut the lawn. Finally, the completed job was done haphazardly; the tops of the pickets are not straight, unlike the original fence. See the attached photo?the section with new pickets (far left) is straight, but the one next to it with old pickets is not; the section on the middle right is not straight, and the section with the new and old pickets (far right) is straight. I had specifically asked him to straighten the tops, and he never did."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Schedule an inspection immediately after heavy rain events or when the Cane River reaches flood stage. Submerged foundations develop delayed cracking weeks after water recedes. Book masonry work between February and April, before extreme summer heat impacts mortar curing and hurricane season arrives. Act fast when mortar joints recede more than a quarter inch, as Natchitoches humidity accelerates water infiltration at this depth.

Helpful?

You should absolutely bundle projects. Combining masonry work with French drain installation or yard regrading prevents premature foundation failures in flood-prone Natchitoches neighborhoods. Bundle exterior repointing with full waterproofing applications to lock out humidity. For historic renovations, completing window replacements or roof repairs simultaneously allows contractors to share expensive scaffolding. Submit these bundled exterior upgrades together to streamline your local historic permit applications.

Helpful?

Directing lawn sprinklers at brick foundations accelerates mortar erosion in our humid climate. Allowing ivy to climb walls forces roots into joints, physically separating the brick. Incorrect pressure washing strips soft mortar from historic Natchitoches homes. Applying deicing salt during winter freezes causes severe brick spalling. Check your irrigation setup and trim back vegetation to protect your masonry work from chronic moisture damage.

Helpful?

Stair-step cracks in brick walls stem from foundation shifts in expansive LA clay soils, requiring structural correction rather than simple patching. Sinking brick patios indicate base erosion rather than material failure. White salt deposits point directly to poor yard drainage or broken gutters. Hire a structural engineer to inspect the damage before scheduling masonry work, ensuring you address the true root cause.

Helpful?

Watch for white salt deposits returning quickly after cleaning, indicating active moisture issues. In older Louisiana homes, crumbling joints happen when modern cement is improperly applied over original lime mortar. Recurring stair-step cracks or new wall bulging means the previous masonry work ignored underlying soil movement. If you notice interior water stains after exterior repairs, the prior job missed critical flashing gaps.
