"We have an old 1930's house that needed a large chimney repointed and cap replaced. Rod at Layman Masonry and his team were referred to us by our roofer, Kelvin Howard, for doing good work. We contacted Rod for a quote, and he came out the very next day to quote a price that was good considering the amount of work to be done. Rob and his team are insured and were courteous and friendly throughout the project. They showed up on time and maintained a clean job site. The project consisted of grinding out and replacing the old mortar, a new chimney cap and to put two coats of paint back on the chimney. The project was completed in 4 days despite rain every other day. We were very happy with the work done and will use Rod again in the future."

When installing deck boards, screws are a better option than nails. For one, screws have more holding strength than nails, so they’re better at keeping your deck boards in place. Vinyl is generally considered to be the best option for homeowners seeking railings that are both durable and affordable. Vinyl provides protection against the mold and rot that can develop within wood railings. Composite is another budget-friendly option. However, people building high-end decks often prefer the look of glass panels or metal rails.

You can’t fix warped composite decking boards, but you can replace them so your deck surface is no longer warped. For more severely warped decks, especially those with damaged joists or support beams, you’ll need a pro to inspect the deck and recommend whether you should replace the structure or repair the damage.

To flatten a cupped deck board, start by ensuring it’s dry. Then, try flipping the board over so the cupped side faces down and reattach it. If that’s not possible, you can use screws to pull it tighter to the joists or plane the edges slightly to reduce the cup. It’s best to replace severely cupped boards.

There are deck restoration products and oil-based wood stains that can help bring back some of the color and shine to your faded Trex decking. However, if your boards are suffering from serious fading due to UV rays or chemical cleaning products, don’t expect miracles. Also, these products are only suitable for use on the older Trex boards, not the capped, second-generation Trex products.
