"I called Highland Lock and Key recently to change two locks and Charlie arrived in under an hour. He was very professional and honest. It turned out that one of the locks didn't really need to be replaced, he simply did a quick fix and re-keyed it, saving me from buying a whole new lock. I highly recommend him!"

"Charlie is a great guy! He's done a few services for us over the last few years (rekey locks, locked out of cars, etc..) and he's always showed up quickly and did a great job. I definitely recommend Highland Lock and Key for a reliable locksmith. I've turned friends and co-workers onto him several times and have only heard positive feedback about it. An honest and reliable locksmith these days is like a great auto mechanic- you keep them and don't let them go!"

"Joe and his wife were great. My daughter had been taken to the emergency department and the ambulance crew had locked the door to the condo ... my daughter did not have her keys. Joe arrived at 5AM, picked my daughter up at the ER and went back to the condo. There were some problems getting the door unlocked but Joe and his wife were not about to leave my daughter out in the cold. I was 5 and 1/2 hours away. Joe assured me he would solve this problem and there was no need for me to get on the road. He did! He and is wife are absolute saints. They took care of my daughter and the situation as if she were their own!!"

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

While lock crunching as a whole is not terribly common, it is one of the most frequently used means of forced entry into a home. Recent data suggests that forced entry through lock crunching or snapping occurs in more than 25% of burglaries.

The good news is that, yes, you can change locks yourself. Many people find it’s an easy DIY project that requires few tools and not much expense (depending on which lock you’re installing). If you have trouble with any part of an installation, you can always call a locksmith to help finish installing them.

If you’re having an issue turning the key inside a lock, chances are there is dust or dirt buildup within the cylinder. The easiest solution is applying a dry lubricant to the lock, which loosens the dirt buildup. You may need to turn the key a few times for it to work properly again.

Any type of dead bolt lock provides the highest level of safety for a single device. However, it’s also important to determine a lock's grade. Locks can come in either Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3, which indicates how durable it is and if it’s constructed solidly. Safety experts recommend choosing locks based on Grade 1, which offers the highest level of durability.

It depends on the quality of the keyless lock and usage, but in general, you can expect a keyless lock to last around three to five years. The batteries typically last around six to 12 months. The good news is most keyless locks include a low battery indicator so you can receive ample warning if your battery is about to die.
