Granite is naturally water-resistant and suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways. However, proper sealing and maintenance are essential to prevent staining or water damage, especially in areas prone to frequent spills or high humidity. Choosing the proper sealant and reapplying it regularly will help maintain the floor’s durability and appearance in these environments.
You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire.
Uniform spacing between tiles is important for a professional and clean appearance. To achieve this spacing, tile spacers should be placed between the tiles and left in place until the mortar hardens and the tiles are secure. You can use X-shaped spacers vertically in between the tiles and laid flat at the corners.
Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. You can apply new tile over existing tile in a bathroom, but the new tile may not look great if you lay it over worn, cracked, or uneven tiles. The adhesive may not be able to attach the new tile to the old tile properly, and this will add more weight to the drywall.
It takes more time and effort, but removing existing tiles before retiling a bathroom is worth it.
