Whether or not you can replace an undermount sink without removing the countertop depends on the type of countertop you have. The most expensive countertop materials are marble and granite. These natural materials are very heavy and require specialized tools and knowledge to install. If you are building a laminate countertop from scratch, instead of buying premade laminate countertops, you can use particle board underneath the laminate. You will need to use a sheet of particle board for the substrate, along with four-inch strips underneath the edges. For proper installation, make sure that any seams are level and use a sander as necessary before installing the laminate.
Quartz can be slightly cheaper than granite, but it depends on the grade of the material. For instance, a high-grade quartz could be more expensive than a low-grade granite. The price of granite can tick higher because it requires sealing, while quartz does not, and it’s also slightly more difficult to install, increasing labor costs.
While Formica® countertops are scratch-resistant, they are not fully scratch-proof. They will develop marks on their upper decorative layer more easily than quartz, granite, or porcelain tile. Always use cutting boards for food prep and avoid dragging heavy items, such as blenders or big pots, across the surfaces.
