"Terry and his crew arrived ready to tackle many challenges that came with building my new deck. Faced with constant rain, more than a few changes to plans, and difficult terrain to navigate his equipment around, Terry never told me he couldn't do something. Creative Landscape is exactly that, "CREATIVE"! My new, upper and lower deck are finished. Terry was able to take mine and my wife's vision and build it. I have much more work to be done still. Creative Landscape will be doing all of my landscaping work."

"I called and called trying to find someone that could patch a hole in the drywall & fix the damage done to my front door after it was kicked in, dead bolt and all. I had a couple places that did actually call me back like they had promised but, was told that they didnt have the time for something like that. Guess their pocket book is more important than someone's safety, shows how much they actually care about their customers. I received a call from Quality Painting shortly after visiting the Home Advisor website. Chris had the repairs done in almost no time at all & charged WAY less than I thought it would cost me to have everything done. He also asked for my opinion on things severa times throughout to make sure it was being done the way I wanted. I enjoyed talking with Chris and im also very thankful that he prioritizes his customer, not his pocket. The next time I need repairs done, I'm not going to waste my time calling anyone else!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

There are several methods for attaching stair stringers to a deck. The best way is to bolt the stringers to the deck joists using three carriage bolts in a triangular pattern. This method offers the sturdiest fit for stairs that won’t budge. Alternatively, attach the stringers to the deck rims using lag bolts or to the posts using adjustable slope hangers.

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

In most cases, your deck will need some form of deck footing to hold it in place, preventing moisture from rotting your wood and decreasing your deck’s lifespan. Concrete deck blocks are the most common type of footing for floating decks. Some homeowners use ground-level deck footings. For added security, consider digging and laying your ground-level footings below ground.

While experienced DIYers may take on the challenge, hiring a licensed professional is often the best route, especially for larger or elevated structures. A local deck contractor is typically the best pro for the job, as they have specialized experience and are knowledgeable about local building codes, ensuring your deck is built safely and designed to last. Other professionals who can build a deck include general contractors and carpenters, who may be more readily available in some regions.
