"Ed provided exceptional service at a great price. He was easy to work with and my wife loved dealing with him as well. I have to share that the very first project I asked Ed to bid was a complete deck rebuild without sharing I may have any future business for him at all. He drew up the bid for the rebuild but he could sense it wasn't a huge priority and all we really were trying to do was fix some stair structure issues and paint the deck. Ed also came with that bid and was the one that suggested it and ultimately convinced is it was the right thing for us. This meant a fraction of the opportunity for Ed but he felt it was the right thing and we were so thankful. Between this integrity, rare partnership approach from a contractor, and the quality of work at an unbeatable price we've come back to Ed for repeat business for years and haven't been disappointed."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

The opposite is actually true: Wood stains tend to appear lighter when they’re fully dry. However, stains may darken as they weather and oxidize with age. Stains might also darken on surfaces left in direct sunlight, as UV rays can break down pigment particles and cause them to darken over time.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.

The need for a topcoat on a painted deck depends on various factors, primarily the type of paint used and your desired level of protection. Many premium deck paint formulations are self-sealing, eliminating the necessity for an additional topcoat. These paints often have built-in additives that substantially protect against moisture, UV rays, and everyday wear and tear.

Staining a deck is typically less expensive upfront than painting. The cost to stain a deck professionally averages around $850, with most homeowners paying between $550 and $1,250, depending on the deck's size. A DIY staining project can cost less than $100. The cost to paint a deck ranges from $500 to $2,000. While the initial cost of staining is lower, it's important to consider long-term expenses. Paint can last up to 10 years, whereas stain needs to be reapplied every few years, which could lead to higher costs over time.

You’ll want to avoid excessively hot or humid conditions, so it’s best to apply your stain in late spring to early fall. It's also important to watch the weather forecast and aim for days when there isn’t rain expected for at least three days. For new decks, allow the wood to season beforehand for at least four to eight weeks.
