You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. However, you should still shut off the power at your main circuit breaker panel before activating the generator. When installed and used correctly, generators are safe to use. The most critical generator safety tips to keep in mind are:

  • Never use a portable generator inside an enclosed space, as the carbon monoxide exhaust it creates is lethal.

  • Never attempt to connect your generator to your home’s electrical panel independently; hire a professional for this dangerous job.

  • Never overload your generator by connecting more appliances than for which it’s rated; you can damage your generator and appliances or even cause a fire.

While diesel is relatively stable, it won’t last nearly as long as propane and you may have to replace it if it sits unused for too long. Diesel can sometimes struggle to work efficiently or start engines during especially cold weather, so it’s not the best choice for every climate. Compared to fuels like propane and natural gas, diesel generators tend to be noisier and create more exhaust, which isn’t always ideal for home use.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.
