Gutter guards can slow down the process of getting clogged gutters, but they won’t technically reduce your chances of it happening. They’re not a permanent solution. Instead, they’re a temporary fix where after some time, leaves and debris will continue to build on top of them and make your gutters less effective. Gutter guards work in heavy rain, but perhaps not as well. The main purpose of gutter guards is to protect your gutters from getting clogged with debris, which can be carried (or worsened) by heavy rain. However, a clogged gutter isn’t the only reason rain isn’t traveling through your gutter properly. Other reasons include roof shingles extending past your gutters, improperly installed gutters, or incorrect gutter sizes. 

If you suspect you have any of these other gutter issues, it may be more cost-effective to repair your gutters first and see if that solves the problem before investing in gutter guards.

It can be worth painting gutters if they look worn and old but are still functioning properly. Gutters should define and complement your roofline, not detract from the look of your home. Rust can be treated and potentially removed before repainting, but severely rusted gutters may need to be replaced instead. If your gutters simply aren't functioning, try cleaning them out.

It’s best to schedule regular gutter cleanings before there’s a major issue, but sometimes life gets in the way. Luckily, a few telltale signs will let you know when to clean your gutters ASAP:

  • You notice built-up debris in your gutters.

  • Your gutters overflow with water when it rains.

  • Water doesn’t readily flow from your downspouts.

  • Your gutters are damaged or visibly leaking.

  • You notice evidence of leaking along your roof, siding, yard, or pavement.

  • Your gutters have pulled away from your roofing or exterior walls.

  • You see water damage on your soffits or fascia.

  • You have weeds growing in your gutters.

  • You start to see ants or other insects around your gutters or in your home.

  • You suddenly have issues with leaks in your crawl space or basement.

Heated gutters are significantly easier to maintain than standard gutters. While you will have to check to make sure they’re functioning properly and aren’t accumulating leaves and other tree debris, you will never have to worry about ice dams, icicle formation, or related gutter damage and repairs, which can get expensive. Heated gutters will require an upfront investment, but it might very well be worth it for the time and potential money you’ll save down the road on gutter maintenance.
