"It was pretty rocky. At first. Several appoints made by Tri-State no one ever showed up.Crew showed up to install the Generator before the site survey and did not have necessary equipment or cooperation of Electric or gas company nor call before you dig had been notified. I called Tri-State to warn them the call before dig had never been preformed. They said they'd take care of it, did not happen until right before installation crew came back the second time. The first time they were here they could not have installed the generator even had they had all the parts because none of the utilities had been marked. Finally after about three months the Generac was installed and working. I had several questions that I could never get answered by calling Tri-State. One of the installation team had to come back a couple of weeks later to replace a damaged part and he answered all my questions. The guys who installed the Generac were great, the problem is your guys operation center and call center as far as I can see do not communicate very well. Anyway the generator has worked fine in several power outages this spring. I am happy right now but I live in dread something goes wrong and I have to call Tri-State for help."

"Had Stagecoach RV in Peru work on RV generator, called me said circuit board caught fire and found one on an online bidding store for 909$ and some change took home to put in the pole barn. Spring comes to get RV out change all fluids fire generator up to cool down RV with ac, doesn't work. Call stagecoach RV and tells me guy who did generator quit to get a job with insurance, so I'm screwed out of 900 and my one year warranty? He said I can give you his number. (screwed) checked Angie s List and Huston Electric came up? Knew they did commercial and residential wiring did not know they worked on Rv generators, so I left to search, 10 minutes later they call me saying yes we see you inquired about work need on Rv generator. I told him all I knew and we were leaving for outer banks on Friday (this is Monday on phone) guy says bring it by tomorrow. I said I'm on a time crunch to load for a trip can I bring it this evening, he asked a guy there how late in the shop he said he would wait. I dropped off Monday evening, got call 10:15 am Tuesday we got you all fixed up someone been in circuit board area and had loose pin connector and loose connection at 30 amp breaker and straightened up wiring on board it was a mess, also looks like someone put in new voltage regulator and never adjusted it was only getting 107volts, adjusted it and all is good. I went to pick up and he said I had to look up the schematic for wiring and it brought up the whole manual so I printed it off for you and put it in a plastic binder. $285.00 out the door worked great on the trip no issues and if I need generator service again it will be Huston Electric in Lafayette"

"I called NexGen Electrical on a Thursday morning to ask about removing/replacing my post light. They came out at noon and gave me a quote to replace it. Decided to replace it and was scheduled for the next week. They provided the new light, cemented it in ( even made a run to Menards to purchase a bulb) and the job was completed in about 2 hours. I feel the cost was reasonable. David was very good to work with. Will definitely hire them again for future projects."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The amount of time a standby generator can run continuously is around 3,000 hours on average. However, standby generators can generally run indefinitely as long as they have a continuous fuel supply. Generators hooked up to a home’s natural gas supply are the best option for extended usage, as these won’t rely on a finite fuel supply based on how much you have in storage. Generators running on liquid propane or diesel won’t last as long, as these require fuel storage and regular refueling to stay running.

The cost to install a whole-house generator averages $5,200, with a typical price range of $1,500 to $8,900. However, total costs can vary from $400 for a small portable unit to over $18,000 for a large-capacity system. The most significant cost factor is the generator's size and capacity, but other variables include the brand, fuel type, and labor for assembly and installation.

Generator costs can be broken down by type:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500 to $2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000 to $6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000 to $18,000

To avoid paying for more power than you need, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load for your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes to find the best deal for your specific needs and budget.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.
