"James Ford came over as we were getting our home ready for sale and inspected several areas of roof questioned by an inspector. He provided photographs of areas of concern to prove items fixed or not in need of repair, and he fixed a small area not correctly done by another contractor. His company did the original roofing to our house and inspection found only 3 areas of concern 12 years later. Two were fine and one, done incorrectly by others well after move in, he fixed. Small job for him to do but he did it well and with much professionalism. Would use again when needed."

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

Painting over stucco could be a good idea if you’d like an entirely different color for your home or if your stucco is largely cracked and faded. Painting also helps prevent moisture from entering cracks, which could lead to mold and mildew growth. Depending on the paint you choose, you may also add an extra layer of waterproofing to your home when you paint the stucco.

Stucco by itself is durable, but even paint made for harsh environmental conditions requires regular maintenance and upkeep. In other words, repaint your stucco every five to 10 years, depending on its current condition. Trust your senses. If it looks fine, it probably is fine. If it looks cracked and worn down, give it a new coat.

You should use three coats of paint when applying to a heavily textured or porous surface. Sometimes painting a lighter color over a darker color requires three coats of paint or more to achieve full, even coverage. Trim or baseboards should also get three coats of paint.

It’s less expensive to paint shutters than to replace them. The average cost to repaint all of the shutters on a house is $350. That’s roughly half the cost of replacing shutters, which is around $720. Many variables go into these figures, of course. Installing new vinyl shutters, one of the cheapest materials, might save money compared to a couple of coats of expensive oil paint. Most of the time, though, painting saves money.

A finishing layer is an important step in the staining process. A top coat helps make a stain last longer by protecting it from spills, scratches, and natural weathering.

A lacquer finish is thin, fast-drying, and best used for cabinets, molding, and trim. It’s not recommended for outdoor furniture. Another option is varnish, which has a glossy finish with a protective film and is often used on outdoor wood objects. Polyurethane, known as “liquid plastic,” dries quickly but doesn’t hold up well in the heat. Lastly, a shellac finish adds a warm tint to wood but is affected by heat.
