"Progresive Restoration did a great job on our condo building. Marcus and his team are extremely hard-working and communicate often. There was never any confusion about our project and they paid attention to every detail from when they started on the estimate to completing the job. "The team did a great job installing our kitchen cabinets and appliances. They were respectful, friendly and knowledgeable. Brad was quick to respond to messages. The cost was very reasonable and they did not try to keep increasing price for things, which alot of construction companies do. The quality of the install was top notch and they were helpful in getting the finishing touches even though the trim/fillers provided by the cabinet makers was not ideal. Watchmen will be my first call on any future home repairs/upgrades."

"Josh is extremely knowledgeable and very well versed in all areas. He was very fair with his pricing, handed all transactions and any issues with professionalism. Not your stereotypical contractor, Josh is a family man that was respectful. The project took a little longer than anticipated, but in the end had the level of quality and skill we had expected!"

"Roberto and his wife were very friendly. Overall the project was completed to my satisfaction, however there were some minor issues of concern. My garage was left in a less than desirable state. The shelves sustained water damage from the saw and stain was splattered on the walls. The toilet was not reinstalled correctly which led to a leak. The ceiling in my furnace room sustained some damage due to this and Roberto never came back to address it as he'd promised."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

Accurate measurements, sturdy materials, and seamless integration with other structures.
