"Frankie and his crew were very organized, methodical and very efficient in how they approached each stage of our project. Frankie was present each day from start to finish managing his crew and working himself the entire time. I would hire him again without hesitation and will recommend him to anyone needing landscaping. 5 Stars!! Thank you Frankie."

"My landscape lighting is several years old and was starting to need on-going maintenance. Fred made some suggestions that have made a world of difference on how the new LED lighting looks. Feel like it's a brand new installation. Would definitely recommend Night Scapes to anyone. Very professional with a very quick installation."

"For this particular pro, the lawn was cut unevenly in the front and back yard. You can see where he cut the lawn way too low (which probably killed that section of lawn) and then he readjusted and finished the rest of the lawn. In my back yard, there where patches of unfinished lawn, no edging was done anywhere (which left bits of tall grass alongside the fences) and there were a lot of grass clippings left in the front and back lawn (which I received a letter from my HOA from). Granted my lawn in the back yard was overgrown, I paid 3 times the price to get my lawn manicured by a professional. This was not a professional job. I could have gotten the neighbor's teenage son to do this kind of job. I'm giving this pro one more chance to redeem himself. If this job is anything like his last, then I'm done."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The truth is, there really is no such thing as a 100% deer-proof plant. Deer will decimate even the prickliest flora if they’re hungry enough. However, there are plenty of beautiful plants that deer don’t necessarily enjoy. These include thistles, wisteria vines, sword ferns, and beautyberries.

Deer are herbivores, and they love vegetable gardens as much as Peter Rabbit. If you don’t want to fence in your entire property, consider creating an attractive raised-bed veggie garden with mesh fencing around it to keep out deer and other critters.

Since you’ll likely be digging a trench to install your yard drainage system, this is a good time to complete other tasks that involve digging up your yard, including: Sprinkler system installation Lawn reseeding Regrading your yard Redesigning your landscaping If your drain is under a walkway or driveway, your contractor must also remove those materials. This is a great time to consider upgrading your hardscaping features, especially if they’re nearing the end of their life span.

The best way to landscape your front yard on a budget is to invest in hiring a professional for hardscaping—things like upgrading walkways, redoing driveways, and installing partitions around garden beds. You can often do the softscaping yourself—think laying down mulch, caring for your lawn, removing weeds, and planting flowers and shrubs. It’s also almost always worthwhile to pay a professional for routine yard maintenance, as this dramatically improves curb appeal and delivers above 100% ROI in most cases.

Many ways to landscape a steep slope on a budget exist. Avoiding expensive retaining wall construction is the first step. Consider creating a rocky slope with boulders or large stones, or think about planting perennials that return every year with a single investment. Transplanting small trees from elsewhere on your property is also possible and can help to stabilize steep slopes without purchasing new ones.

It is possible to DIY complete hardscaping projects, but in most cases, hiring a professional is best to get the job done correctly. Hardscaping—including installing patios, decks, retaining walls, walkways, and water features—is challenging and time-consuming, so the money you spend on a professional is typically worth it. Not only will the quality be better, but you could avoid problems that come along with a lack of hardscaping experience, like drainage issues that can lead to costly foundation damage and leaks in your home.
