I am a 1 man band home remodeler, plumber, and carpenter who moonlights as a handyman. My company is fully licensed and insured and comes with a complete list of glowing references. I have been in the business for almost 15 years and am a second generation contractor. I basically grew up with a wrench in one hand and a plunger in the other. My reputation is stellar and customer satisfaction is my number one priority. My work includes painting (interior and exterior), drywall (mudding, sanding, and taping), cabinet installation, tile floor installation, electrical work, most plumbing work (soldering pipes, shower, toilet, tub, sink piping, etc), minor HVAC work, countertop installation, replace/install doors (closet, bedroom, front entrances), wall removal and additions, carpet removal and installation, hard wood floor removal and installation, and hardwood floor refinishing/staining. I have done both commercial and residential jobs ranging from complete remodels of homes to touching up paint in a small walk-in closet. I rarely turn down jobs because if I can't do a job myself, I have an extensive network of colleagues who can. I will usually do the work myself, but for larger jobs I enlist a crew of qualified individuals who will help me complete the work quickly and efficiently. I generally only ask for 30% up front depending on the size of the job, and don't accept final payment until my customer is COMPLETELY SATISFIED with the work I have done unless major materials (stove, fridge, etc) are required. All of my work is accompanied by a 1 year warranty. Prior to beginning work, I provide a detailed quote in writing that is signed by myself and the customer so there is no confusion over what will be charged. My pricing is competitive and honest. My quotes are binding and there are no scams or hidden costs. While I live in Schaumburg, I regularly travel to the city and surrounding areas for work. I am not afraid of hard work or a challenge and am willing to work with you to help fix or create your dream home. This is not a side job for me, it is MY LIFE'S WORK. I take pride in what I do and feel that I was born to do it. Mostly, I love transforming something that is run down and old into something new and beautiful. Give me a chance to prove myself and I promise you will not be disappointed. I am available for work immediately. Lee Hess 1 Guy Fixes All Home Improvements 847-873-3396

"Danny is a professional exterminator and promptly found out where paper wasps and yellow jackets were entering our garage. Not only did he eliminate them, but he plugged the area where they were entering. We have used this company several times and have always experienced professional, reliable service in a timely manner.i would give Guardian Pest Control a 10 on a scale of 1-10. "

Earthquake Retrofitting questions, answered by experts

An earthquake retrofit is essential for safety in an earthquake-prone area. Without proper retrofitting, your home is at risk of sliding off the foundation, shifting, or collapsing.

You may also require a retrofit if your home was built before 1980 when building codes began requiring reinforcing, bracing, and bolting for new construction. You may not be eligible for insurance to help pay for earthquake-related damages without a retrofit.

Ensure proper ventilation, fix leaks, and schedule regular pest inspections to protect your property.

A home with proper earthquake retrofitting can sustain minimal damage in earthquakes of up to 7.0 magnitude, although risks are higher based on how close and deep the earthquake is. A home closer to the earthquake epicenter will sustain greater damage, especially if the earthquake is closer to the surface of the Earth, but retrofitting can help minimize the risk of injuries.

Even if you invested in the cost of a gas shut-off valve for your oven and other appliances, it’s a good idea to add a seismic shut-off valve as an extra safety measure.

Gas shut-off valves for appliances are manual, meaning someone has to cut off the flow of gas. This leaves room for error, as you might not be home or might be too distracted to think about gas lines during an earthquake. An earthquake valve is automatic and will protect your home from gas-related disasters in the event of an earthquake.

Grounding is a great first step to prevent electrical shock, but you can take it further with GFCI outlets and AFCIs (arc fault circuit interrupters). In particular, AFCIs help protect against the type of electrical arcs that cause fires, like if a mouse chews on a wire or your laptop starts overheating at the wall. These are required in some areas of your home.
