Established in 1991, PRO TOP Roofing is an Illinois based full service roofing contractor specializing in industrial, commercial and residential projects. With our office located in Elk Grove Village we service the entire northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin areas. Our team of experience professionals have designed and installed 1000’s of systems for both low and steep sloped roofs. With our dedication to technical knowledge and customer service we have established ourselves as one of Chicago lands premier mid-sized roofing companies. We are a "full service" roofing company and we will handle everything from a new roof installation, restoration and maintenance to re-roofs and repairs. All with the assurance that can solely come with years of experience. Quality craftsmanship and design are key - and we go beyond the basics with innovative maintenance programs, extended warranties and great customer service, ensuring our customers' satisfaction and their roof's long term performance. "I really need to write 2 reviews. The work was done over 7 years ago. Up until one year after the work was completed I would have given him an excellent review. Strike 1 came after a year when I first went up to my unfinished, full house attic and discovered what a horrible mess he had left. Debris from the tear off of the 3 previous layers of shingles covered every inch of the attic, including large toys, boxes and furniture from my Mother-in-law stored there. We were not told to expect this. I did not even bother calling him about it since it was a year after he completed the work. Strike 2 came just about 4 to 6 months ago when I called him about an attic leak we spotted after investigating signs of possible water damage in the 2nd floor ceiling. I have tried without success to schedule a time for him to examine the roof and determine the cause of the leak. I believe we spoke directly maybe twice. He said he was waiting for the weather to clear. Since then we have had many days & weeks of good weather, but still no response. In total I believe I have called him at least 5 times. (By the way, it certainly did not take 5 calls to get an appointment for the estimate to do the initial work). He has not returned my most recent calls so I am moving on to another roofer recommended by a friend. So the moral of the story is to check your attic immediately after having a tear off/new roof installed by PRO TOP and hope you never have any leaks after. I would not expect this from a business whose prices are not exactly bargain level. Their estimate promises personal attention and quick service; unfortunately that was not my experience. Finally, if this job is too small or for some other reason he doesn't want to do it he should just say so and save me the time of chasing after him."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Whether or not you can fix water-damaged baseboards depends on the extent of the damage and the baseboard material. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) baseboards cannot be repaired once severely water-damaged—you’ll need to replace the damaged sections with new baseboards. Wood baseboards may be repaired if the water damage is minimal and only affects a small portion of the baseboard.

Signs of structural damage include foundation cracks, roof leaks, bouncy floors, crumbling concrete, and cracked or leaning chimneys. Structural damage can make itself apparent in various ways, and sometimes, there may not be obvious signs. Inspect your foundation and roof annually to stay ahead of potentially serious structural problems.

Not all wood that’s been softened by termites needs to be replaced. You may be able to salvage wood using a wood hardener instead of replacing beams. However, you’ll need to hire a structural engineer to assess the damage and the overall stability of the wood before making a replacement plan.

Yes, columns can be used to replace a load-bearing wall. However, you will need to use a support beam as well. Using columns can be a great way to provide additional support for large areas and improve your home's aesthetics.

You can use a nail to find ceiling joists, but it’s not as reliable as a stud finder, and you’ll end up with lots of small holes in your ceiling. If the nail hits a joist, you'll feel increased resistance. Mark the spot with a pencil. Repeat this process regularly along the ceiling, 16 or 24 inches apart, until you've mapped out the joist locations.
