"We are very satisfied with Brett, his son and his brother who all helped build my beautiful new deck. They removed our old deck and completely built a new and larger covered deck. We had two privacy walls built which came out so much better than we even hoped for. The one thing that Brett never did was not show up. He was always here when he said he would be. He and his crew steadily worked until all of it was complete. We would recommend this company to anyone. The work ethic is excellent as is the work quality. I know they do everything from new decks to installing new cabinets to building new additions on homes. And everything in between. Brett is someone you can put your trust in to manage the whole job and make sure it turns out just like you want. Mountain Ridge Contractors is a company you can trust to get whatever the job is done right. We would hire them again in a heartbeat. And we plan on it."

"In a time when it s hard to get a call back for a bid, Quentin with Align called me at 8:03 am after I put in a bid request at 5 am (I m an early bird). He is incredibly friendly - such a nice guy - and gave us a great price. Our project was brutal - re-surfaced a really old deck with rhino-lining type paint in 100 degree heat. Two products wouldn t pull it up so Quentin s boys had to sand it. Took 3-4 days longer than expected, we actually had nicer wood underneath than expected (redwood - yay!) and Quentin and James worked hard to find us out of stock boards. Even though I KNOW it cost them more to do this project he still stuck to his original quote!! Thank you Quentin!"

"We hired AKAL construction llc (aka ASV cabinets) to install cement board type siding on our house beacuse they were the most competitively priced. Sometimes when you go with the lowest bid, you "get what you pay for". But these guys were TOP NOTCH! They were on time, communicative, and worked fast and hard, and cleaned up everyday that they were here! They were also patient and understanding with change orders and material shortages. We will definitely use them again in the future and recommend them to anyone looking for siding or any other trade work."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

PVC decking can get slippery when wet because it’s made from plastic. However, composite and wood decking can also be slippery when wet. It’s best to wear shoes with grippy soles when walking on a wet deck, no matter the material, and to be extra cautious not to slip and fall down.

Yes, it is generally safe to have a fire pit on a deck, but you must adhere to building codes and take several safety precautions. For both built-in and freestanding models, you must use a heat-resistant barrier, such as a fire pit pad or heat shield, between the pit and the deck. Additionally, consider the weight of the fire pit and ensure your deck can structurally support it, reinforcing it if necessary. The fire pit must also be positioned a safe distance from your house, particularly from materials like vinyl siding, to prevent heat damage.

Ultimately, overapplication of stain can compromise the deck's appearance, durability, and longevity. It may result in an uneven finish, with excess stain pooling, dripping, or drying into thick patches. It can also obscure the wood's natural grain and texture, detracting from the desired aesthetic. Moreover, excessive staining may not fully penetrate the wood, leading to poor adhesion and premature wear. Additionally, thick layers of stain are prone to peeling, cracking, and blistering as they struggle to bond with the surface.

Rot loves moisture, so deck rot typically impacts the parts of a board that stay wet. This includes the underside of boards, in addition to support posts and joists. However, any part of a board can rot, given the right conditions.

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.
