If you don’t put gravel under concrete, the concrete can crack, sink, bow, or crumble. Even the concrete forming process will not go as smoothly if you are working directly on the soil or bare bedrock. Generally, you shouldn’t lay artificial grass straight onto concrete. You’ll want to add some sort of underlayment that acts as a cushion. This makes it a little bit safer for children running around a pool and is recommended to prevent injury in recreational settings. It also protects that artificial grass’ backing. Just glue the grass to the underlayment using the proper adhesive.

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.
