It purportedly improved the temperature differential between upstairs and downstairs rooms and reduced dust by plugging holes in the supply and return air ducts. As soon as I saw the product demonstrated on This Old House, I knew I wanted to try it in my house. My house was built in 1925 and is a 1-1/2 story residence. I've always had problems cooling the upstairs, even with central air conditioning. In the summer, it is unbearably hot upstairs, even with the a/c cranked up. In the winter, it is coolish upstairs, but certainly livable (heat rises). My house has old style vents on the first floor - large square supply vents (5) and two in-floor rectangular return vents. Upstairs, there are only two supply vents and the return air vent is really the stairway down to the first floor. The Aeroseal product addresses the excessive duct leakage that exists in any home. Even if you manually seal by tape the ductwork in your house, there is still quite a bit of leakage. I did a lot of research before getting this product installed, and case studies show that this product consistently reduces leakage by more than 90%. Our heating and cooling appliances are now pretty energy efficient, but the duct work in a building is still a source of a lot of heat/cooling loss. According to the manufacturer, here's some of the technology: 1. Research for Aeroseal was partially funded the US Dept of Energy 2. Aeroseal is the only duct sealant technology that is applied from the inside of the duct system. It is delivered as a non-toxic aerosol mist that seeks out and plugs leaks. 3. Aeroseal has proven to be 95% effective at sealing air duct leaks. 4. The Dept of Energy proclaimed aeroseal technology to be one of the top 23 most important energy conservation technologys for consumer sto come out since the dept was first established. 5. The product was developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1994. 6. Aeroseal has won several prestigious awards, including DOE energy 100 Award, Popular Science -Best of What's New, This Old House - new technologies and 2012 EBie award for use on an existing building retrofit project. I recommend going to the manufacturer website to get more information and view a video of how the installation works. Also, check out the This Old House segment online when they featured this product. When I looked for an Aeroseal service provider in the Twin Cities, Northern One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning was the only provider. In fact, I contacted them only about a month after they started providing this product. They had a service technician trained by the manufacturer to install the product, and they had done several new house installations. Mine would be the first "old house" in which they would install the product. (Therefore I did get a very nice price discount.) The company sent two technicians to install the product. They arrived on time. The set-up definitely takes the most time- it took a couple hours for my house. They have to seal all the vents tightly and tape up larger gaps in the duct work before starting the actual sealing process. They do a computer analysis before and after the sealing process so that actual results can be measured. (One of the technicians still said that my old house duct work was tighter than new house construction to begin with.) While installing, there was a fine mist that developed in the air. The company has a fan/vacuum that collects a lot of it. Also, they opened a lot of windows to help dissipate the mist. They provided masks for us to wear - I actually didn't wear it though. Breathing the substance created a little stickiness in my nose, but eventually it went away. The mist dissipates quickly. It is supposed to be non-toxic. The sealing itself took about 15 minutes for the supply side, and 25 minutes for the return side. The supply/return sealing can be performed dually, but this company does each side separately. My results are as follows: Supply ducts - original leakage was equivalent to a 25 square inch hole. After finishing the Aeroseal, leakage was equivalent to a 1 square inch hole, corresponding to a 95% reduction in duct leakage. Return ducts - original leakage was equivalent to a 43 square inch hole. After finishing the Aeroseal, leakage was equivalent to a 5 square inch hole, corresponding to a 89% reduction in duct leakage. Clean-up was quick. They left my house in tip-top shape. I also received a printed Certificate of Completion that outlines the overall sealing results for both the supply and return sides. I am really pleased with the results, and I can say that the product really works. For the first time, I can cool my upstairs without the use of a window air conditioner upstairs. I can cool it to be about 2 degrees difference from the first floor. I set the thermostat to 74 degrees and close all the supply vents on the first floor except one. Upstairs, the temperature is about 76 degrees. I am anxious to see what happens in the winter, although summer cooling was the more problematic issue for me. I can also report a HUGE reduction of the dust in my house. Before, I used to see the dust pile up just a few days after dusting. Now, it is over 2 weeks since my last dusting and I still don't see the dust pile up on the furniture or window sills. I highly recommend this product to any homeowner. It saves energy, is good for the environment, and most importantly - improves indoor comfort and reduces dust in your own home. I commend Northern One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning for being the first service provider in the Twin Cities for this product. I hope they get a lot of business installing this product. They did a great job and I couldn't be happier.

On price, Goodfellows came in the middle. I was happy with all the bids I received - I thought all were fair and actually, they weren't that far off from each other. However Goodfellows (Al) was the only vendor who talked about the best way to preserve the health of a huge maple tree whose roots were most likely running through the space where the retaining wall was to go. Al suggested using boulders, an idea I actually loved. Boulders could be placed around any roots that would be exposed, and less of the ground would have to be excavated behind the wall because there was no need for gravel backfill. Weather postponed the project several weeks (snow!), but as soon as the weather was cooperative, Al's team came to install the wall. They demolished my old wall, plus tore down a fence that was sitting on top. They also took out a freestanding basketball hoop that I never used. They used very large boulders in a single row and curved the wall around a parking pad. Behind the boulders they placed landscape fabric to hold the dirt. They also poured a bit of concrete around the boulders to fill in some spaces between the bottom of the boulders and the cement parking pad. They also replaced some concrete steps with stone steps - wider than my previous steps. Then they used some pavers that matched some existing pavers I already had to join up the new steps and a walkway to the backdoor of my house. One nice surprise - they cleaned up so nicely and also hauled away some extra brush that I had stacked in a corner of the yard. They left the area so clean, and ready for the next contractors I had hired to install a fence on top of it. The wall is beautiful and looks so natural. I am very, very pleased. The whole job took about a day and a half.

It started on time and ended on time - it took about a month. First, I had a spare toilet installed in the basement so I had something to use while my only bathroom was torn down. At the same time, I had a new laundry tub installed in the basement, and the old concrete one removed. Plumbing was all brought up to code as well. When the project started, Bryan provided me with a schedule of the work to be done from start to finish, as well as contact information for all the subcontractors. Everything was done on schedule, and inspectors showed up on time so the project went very smoothly. My house was built circa 1925, so my one bathroom is very small. The tear down to the studs took one day. There was one hiccup in the project, and it happened right after the tear down. During the middle of the night, a shut-off valve failed, so I woke in the morning to hot water spewing out of one of the valves. Thankfully, there was a hole in the bathroom floor to the basement, so most of the water simply ran down to the same area that I had cleared out to install the toilet. Really no damage in the basement, as all the water eventually ran to the drain down there. There was some damage to the finish of the hardwood floor right outside the bathroom on the main floor (the water was spewing that direction), but very minimal. I called Bryan at 6:15 a.m. that morning to tell him what happened. He and the plumber arrived in about an hour to finish cleaning up and fix the problem. The plumber subcontractor was great - just in case he also replaced the valve at the water main. This was the only problem I experienced in the entire project. Bryan brought in subcontractors for the plumbing, electrical, and tiling. I had picked out one tile pattern, however the tiling sub advised that I use another which actually would look better, and would save me a lot of money. I am very happy with his suggestion. I got great advice about what toilet to buy, as that was the only fixture I cared about (wanted something reliable, higher quality, low-flow). I wasn't picky about the sink and bathtub - I just took what the plumber advised. I ended up with a Kohler toilet. Can't remember the brands of the sink (wall-mounted) and bathtub. But they look great. I had picked out Kohler faucets and wall fixtures. I purchased all Kohler items through the plumber, so warranty would go through him. (Might have been cheaper to buy myself, but I didn't want to worry about paying extra labor costs if in a warranty time-frame) Bryan and I went over early where I wanted the towel rungs, shelves, etc. to go, so before they put in the wall he was able to install something behind that would allow for easy, strong hanging. The bathroom exhaust fan was new - they decided to build a box for it and send the exhaust through to the side wall of the house. It's a Panasonic fan - very quiet. I had an LED light fixture (with dimmer) installed over my re-finished medicine cabinet (I re-finished this myself). I took the mirror from the medicine cabinet to Alchemy Mirror Resilvering in St Paul. It's kind of a vintage medicine cabinet and I liked it. Besides, I didn't find anything I liked better anyway. So I fixed it up to look like new. I also had Bryan install some small cabinets over the door that would accommodate toiletries. They look great - custom built with beadboard on the front. I'm really happy with these, since my house has very little storage space. I did all painting myself. I also had a shower screen installed and I did a lot of research on this (had only used a shower curtain in the past). A friend suggested I look into the screens of the ilk that are used in small bathrooms in Europe. I found two manufacturers in the US that did these - Kohler and another manufacturer in Florida. They both looked like great options for different reasons. The Florida-manufactured product was half the price of the Kohler Minima screen. However, the design of the Kohler Minima shower screen was fantastic. The Kohler Mimina screen is a tri-fold screen that folds back accordian-style when not in use, so it makes it easier to clean the tub, and also isn't in the way when taking a bath. I opted for the Kohler Minima screen, which I purchased at Home Depot. Bryan had never seen or installed these screens, but he said he was always willing to try new things. He installed the screen and I am so very happy with it. It works exactly as I had hoped. When in use, the shower water stays in the tub area and doesn't leak behind the screen anywhere. I had looked for reviews of this product everywhere, including calling Kohler asking for referrals (they couldn't give me any), and calling other plumbing contractors. I found none. So, my review is that this product is fantastic - looks great, is excellent for small spaces, works as advertised, and installed relatively easily (took two people who followed Kohler's instructions exactly). Bryan and crew cleaned up the workspace every day. I have two dogs in the house and the crew was good to them as well. Some of the caulking around the tub and sink shrunk quite a bit in the first few months, leaving some gaps. Bryan came and patched those up for no charge. All in all, I am extremely pleased with how smoothly the project went from beginning to end, and I like how the bathroom looks. Concrete repair costs range anywhere from about $0.10 to $0.15 per linear foot to fill minor cracks, to about $6 to $14 per square foot to replace damaged concrete slabs. Repair costs vary widely depending on the size and type of work needed. For example, replacing 100 square feet of driveway will cost between $600 to $1,400, on average.
The average cost of stamped concrete is around $12 per square foot, but you might pay anywhere from $8 to $28 per square foot. The average 12-foot by 12-foot patio costs $1,730 on average. Your exact pricing will depend on the patio’s square footage, the condition of the area where you want to pour the concrete, the desired stamp pattern, concrete coloring, concrete grade, and local labor prices. Don’t forget to budget for extra costs like land preparation and additional concrete fortifications if necessary.
Depending on the cost to repair your driveway, it may be more cost effective to tear out and replace it with a new concrete driveway. The cost to repave a driveway ranges between $1,400 and $12,100, including removal of the old concrete. Contact a reputable concrete contractor for advice and an estimate. They may have a good reason for going with repairs or replacement after assessing your driveway. You may also have the option to resurface your driveway or pave over it without taking out the existing one.
It’s possible to create stamped concrete yourself, but we don’t recommend it and it’s often not cost-effective. It’s easy to mess up the pattern of a stamped concrete patio or walkway, leaving you with an unsightly home exterior rather than the elegant solution you wanted. Any mistakes made during the ground leveling and concrete pouring process will also increase the risk of cracks forming on your concrete. Additionally, buying enough stamps to get the pattern in before your concrete cures can cost as much as hiring a professional to do the work for you.
Concrete contractors typically charge anywhere from $6 to $14 per square foot. Cost factors include job size, site prep, base material, accessibility, your location, concrete finish, and concrete thickness. Removal of existing concrete, asphalt, deck, pavers, and grass will cost anywhere from $1 to $6 per square foot. Homeowners can often save money by removing and disposing of existing pavers, decks, and grass. Breaking up and hauling away concrete and asphalt is difficult and time-consuming without the proper equipment and may be worth having the pros do that work.
