Generally, the term “rolled roofing” refers to MSR (mineral surface roll) roofing. This type of roofing is similar to asphalt shingles but comes in a roll that’s unraveled and installed over your roof deck. There are many types of rolled roofing, including TPO, EPDM, and modified bitumen roofing (aka torch down roofing).

The lifespan of asphalt shingles is between 15 and 30 years, depending on the type of shingle you install. A 3-tab shingle roof may only last for 15 years, while a luxury asphalt shingle roof will usually last for 30 years or more. You should have an overhang of at least 1/2-inch, though, as anything shorter can increase the risk of moisture getting blown under the shingles and damaging your roof deck or fascia.
