"Amazing team, they were able to help me when we had no water in the house for a week because of the broken water line under the driveway. The driveway needed to be broken down and reconstructed because there was erosion under it. On short notice the team came out and broke ground so that my plumber was able to replace the line. The new driveway and retaining walls look amazing."

"We hired this company to installed a large 1300 Sq ft patio around the house and driveway. Project was started and completed within a few days. They listened to what I wanted and delivered a beautiful product. This was the 4th company that I called for my project and the 3rd quote. They were the most expensive quote received but we couldn't be happier."

"I want to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding work and true professionalism shown by A1 Asphalt Paving & Seal Coating. Mr. Ezekiel George and his expert team truly went above and beyond at my property — they made the impossible possible. I didn’t have the full budget to completely pave my jagged, worn-out driveway, but the compassionate team at A1 Asphalt was incredibly understanding and sympathetic to my situation. Ezekiel and his dad (Jerry) personally worked with me to create a custom plan that delivered exactly what I needed — all while staying well within my means. They even offered a flexible payment plan to ease the financial pressure. From start to finish, the crew was fast, diligent, and highly skilled. They kept me informed every step of the way and only asked for payment once the job was complete and I was fully satisfied. A week later, after some heavy rain, I noticed a small blemish. I called Ezekiel and received an immediate, friendly response. He promptl"

"Georgis Best Concrete, LLC completely replaced my driveway, sidewalk and front steps yesterday. Their work is absolute perfection! Chris Tamayo (owner) explained clearly what would be done and quoted a great price for complete removal and replacement of an old driveway, sidewalk and front steps. The team he sent was amazing - they are professional and definitely expert at concrete installation. Every team member worked carefully and diligently to compete the job. Chris was here working with them to inspect and approve the installation. I could not be happier with my new driveway, sidewalk and steps!! If you need any concrete work done I highly recommend Georgia Best Concrete, LLC!!"

"My wife and I hired Sudlow Concrete to replace our driveway less than a year ago and they did a wonderful job. We recently hired them again to come back to our home to do an add on to the driveway. Sudlow Concrete once again made our home more beautiful than before. Our home is the talk of the neighborhood. We can't express enough praise on his employee`s proper care, workmanship and cleanup to our home. We highly recommend anyone looking for concrete work to enhance the beauty and value of their home to choose Sudlow Concrete."

"This was by far the best experience using a company I had no prior knowledge of. The owner was very professional and accurate in his assessment of my paving job. His crew worked super fast and thanks to them we are now able to use our garage right in time for the colder temps."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

Several materials are suitable for steep driveways. Gravel and crushed stone are affordable options that provide good traction. Permeable pavers—such as plastic, rubber, or concrete—filled with gravel or crushed stones are also excellent, as they allow water to drain without causing erosion and perform well in ice and snow. Another option is resin, which can be coated with an anti-slip finish and helps prevent puddles. For added stability, you can install a retaining wall to prevent pavers and gravel from shifting over time.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

Like all driveway materials, asphalt can crack in the wrong conditions and with age. Many things can cause asphalt to crack, including shifting soil or settling under the foundation. Other common causes are driving oversized vehicles on the asphalt, tree roots, and using rock salt during the snowy season. Proper installation and sealing the driveway every 10 years can help prevent cracks.
