"Alpha foundations was amazing. Charles Tatem was outstanding at helping us find a way to fix our foundation issue and fitting our budget as well. We came up with multiple options together on how to raise the foundation and we booked. It only tool 2 weeks to get on their schedule. The day before they called to let us know when they'd be there and they were right on time. Mike Oliver and his team came out, they knew exactly what they were doing. They were very professional and organized. His team worked together like a fine oiled machine. I was very comfortable with Alpha foundations from start to finish."

"Shored Up Showed Up! Chase Watkins , his foreman Ben and technician Jackson all worked together with the same mission in mind, I got great customer service, quality work, and all for a fair price. Chase worked my pool deck project in the minute a cancellation came up and the team showed up the next day. They not only did a great job but also advised me on how to avoid future problems. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing foundation services."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, concrete is significantly stronger than masonry, especially if the concrete pour includes reinforcements, like steel rebar. Concrete is a uniform material that can withstand compression, sheer force, and tensile force as long as it’s reinforced. Masonry involves the use of mortar or grout to connect individual building materials, like brick, stone, or tile. Mortar and grout are also reasonably strong and resist compression well, but they don’t come close to the strength of poured concrete.

Cobblestone can be made from many different types of stones but the most common ones, by far, are granite, basalt, limestone, and sandstone.  If you are laying a brick paver patio or other such project, the medium is different. It’s rare, but cobblestone can also be made from marble, slate, jasper, and other types of rock. Technically, you can make cobblestone from almost any type of rock, but if it is weather-resistant and stands the test of time is another question entirely.

Dekton is worth the money for homeowners who want a nonporous countertop that resists heat, stains, water, scratches, and UV damage. It comes in a wide array of colors and patterns at various price points to suit different renovation budgets. Dekton is not worth the cost for homeowners who are particularly worried about chipping or cracking.

No, you shouldn’t lay bricks directly on dirt. While it might seem like a shortcut, it leads to a patio that shifts, sinks, and becomes a maintenance headache. Dirt expands, contracts, and erodes—none of which mix well with long-term stability. To build something that lasts, excavate the topsoil, compact a layer of crushed gravel, and add a coarse sand-setting bed. This layered base gives your bricks proper support, allows drainage, and helps block weeds from creeping through. Cutting corners here just means you’ll spend more time—and money—repairing your brick patio later.

Rock salt and ice melts contain sodium chloride, aka salt, and are corrosive to metal and concrete. If used frequently over time, it can cause corrosion, discoloration, chipping, and cracking to patios, walkways, and driveways. You can try a rock salt alternative or hire a professional snow removal company instead.
