"From our initial visit with Mel and his Improve America team, my wife and I knew immediately that a positive rapport of trust and honesty was established. Immediate call-backs, work done as promised and truly some of the nicest construction people we have ever met. It was an invaluable process of building a relationship that will only transform into new projects."

Small jobs welcome

"Amazing service and quality construction. We were looking for a deck and outdoor kitchen combo that would maximize the space in our small yard. Hunter helped us personalize our space by building both and the final project turned out great. He was more than willing to accommodate our needs and worked with us to design a custom solution that involved multiple tiers, mounting two slides on the deck, and constructing an outdoor kitchen. It was awesome to have someone that could do everything we wanted."

"Todd did an awesome job with the construction of our mother-in-law suite. His estimate came in very close to the cost of the completed project. His crews were all good and showed professionalism. Todd was always only a phone call away if I needed anything and would immediately respond to any questions or concerns. The work performed was excellent to the point that our family and neighbors were asking who the contractor was because they were so impressed with the work. I would recommend him and we do plan on using him again for a future building project.

"We were in Birmingham while J. Brewer and Assocs. redid our condo in Chattanooga. We were quite pleased. The price was fare without too many extras and the time frame was accurate. They were easy to communicate with and let kept us up on the project from afar. I think what speaks volumes is our neighbor who lives in the condominium next door and who was home most days as the work was being done, decided to use them to remodel her unit. She was the day in day out eyes of our project and obviously liked the work and the workers. We would recommend J. Brewer and Assocs."

Barndominium Builders FAQs, answered by experts

It is almost always more affordable to buy an existing home than to build a new one. Building a home involves numerous costs, including labor, permits, inspections, utility hookups, and brand-new materials, finishes, and appliances. Additionally, new construction loans can have higher interest rates than traditional mortgages, and property taxes on new homes are often higher, increasing long-term costs. An exception is a DIY house build, which can be cheaper than buying an existing home if you do the labor yourself. While building is generally more expensive, a new custom home offers complete control over the layout and design. Furthermore, new construction is typically worth more than a comparable pre-owned home and may provide a better return on investment if sold quickly.

Rather than using a common two-by-four piece of wood for a rafter, you probably will use two-by-six, two-by-eight, two-by-ten, or even two-by-twelve boards. Wider lumber is typically a better choice in a larger building as it provides more sturdiness. Some installers may use wider lumber for rafters near the edges of the roof, where the greatest stress occurs, and save money with narrower lumber toward the middle.

While prices fluctuate because of increased demand, fewer supplies, and engineering time, OSB generally remains more affordable than plywood at $1 to $2.40 per square foot compared to the $4.50 to $10 for plywood. Cost is only one factor you should consider when deciding between OSB and plywood.

Ranch and colonial-style homes are often the most affordable to build. They have a common layout with available designs that are easy to adjust in simple ways without having to spend too much on a structural engineer or architect. Both types of homes' symmetry, simple roofs, and often one or two-story plans mean they often fall in the $150 to $200 square-foot range, putting them right around average.

Building a treehouse can vary in difficulty depending on factors such as design complexity, size, and the builder’s woodworking experience. Basic treehouses with simple designs can be manageable for DIYers with some carpentry skills, while more elaborate structures may pose challenges. Adequate planning, research, and careful execution can make the process more manageable, and resources like premade plans or professional assistance are always available for additional support.
