"Can’t say enough about Austin and his team. We had a disaster of a mud pit in the backyard and Outdoor Visions completely revived it. Several neighbors have stopped by to mention how impressed they were watching this company work. Most importantly, the wife is extremely happy. Thanks, Austin! "David did a great job on my driveway, it was really messed up with concrete that was poured by another company and not smoothed out right. After David and his helper were through my driveway looked great!! I would recommend this company to anyone that needs any work that they specialize in. David is a good Christian man and a sweetheart, very nice and polite. His helper (sorry, I didn't get his name) is very nice and polite also. Thanks David for your help and if I need anything else done, I will give you a call."

"After a breif mix up, (They were on vacation when I called), they came out and listened to what I wanted to do, and went right to work with their thoughts and priced in at $17,000 to $20,000. I was standing there with only $1,200.00 so I had to put off this project. I had no idea it would be that expensive."

Asphalt Driveways FAQs, answered by experts

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

Driveway aprons typically range between four and seven inches thick, though your town's building codes will likely have specific requirements. Additionally, you may need to add a layer of permeable aggregate in the excavation below your paved apron to ensure proper stormwater drainage.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

Asphalt, which is stone mixed with tar, is the most common material for outdoor basketball courts because it’s so sturdy and versatile. However, you don't have to use it: another option is polymeric rubber, which has shock pads that can prevent injury. This option is a little more expensive, ranging between $16 and $25 per square foot.

Materials used for indoor basketball courts, such as hardwoods, aren’t really an option outdoors.

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.
