"I called Stephen at "A Born Locksmith" to discuss his fee for work on my father-in-laws Pontiac G6. I asked him to explain to me what work was performed as the request was to gain access to the car. He indicated he had to go inside the door panel and align the mechanism so the outside door handle would work. He said all of his work was inside the door panel. The door will open now but only from the outside. He indicated it would have to go to someone else for the additional repair. He taped up the door handle on the inside of the car, so my 84 year old father-in-law has to reach through his window to open his door (I guess he completed the work he was requested to do). He was onsite doing this work for approximately 1 hour, replaced no parts other than cutting a new key that was not requested, and charged $325. His charges were not discussed up front and my father-in-law was quite surprised at his charges. I frankly believe he was taking advantage of an elderly individual. My father-in-law and I are appalled at his charges. When I spoke to him he never offered to reimburse anything and was quite rude in his response. Please do not call this company (individual) as he indicates he is A+ accredited on his profile. He clearly is not rated by BBB at an A+ and is way over priced especially to the elderly. He should be ashamed of himself."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

A deadbolt has a different design, construction, and security level than a regular lock. Regular locks are mostly used for interior doors around the home, like bedrooms and bathrooms, and they usually include a locking mechanism on the inside. While regular locks are easy to use and install, they provide little security.

A deadbolt adds a layer of security and is most commonly used on exterior doors. The installation is typically more complicated, but they hold up to wear and tear.

Door locks should be changed roughly every seven years. The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.

Over time, latch components may wear out or get grimy, leading to this problem. First, check for dirt, dust, or debris in the latch mechanism to ensure smooth operation. Use an aerosol duster and lubricant to clean and loosen. You may also need to tighten the screws in the component, adjust the strike plate, or replace the lock. If none of these steps resolve the problem, consult a professional locksmith.

Yes, as long as it’s thick enough for the deadbolt. Most interior hollow core doors are at least 1 1/2-inches thick, which is usually the minimum requirement for a deadbolt. You’ll want to find the lock block first before installing. Also, most hollow doors require additional reinforcement for locks, such as a reinforcement plate or plywood block.

A keypad deadbolt, a lock requiring a code entered on a keypad entry, can be a convenient option for families with children coming in and out and needing access to the home. It can also offer an easy solution if you rent your home out, since you can easily change the code as needed. So, depending on your home entry’s needs, a keypad deadbolt may be worth the extra expense.
