"Fantastic experience with David, the Paint Guy - 5 stars all around! We hired David to paint all of our interior walls, trim and doors + sand and stain our interior stairs + repair, replace and paint some boards on the exterior of our home. His team was able to start quickly - they showed up early every day and managed to get all of the work completed in a week. Communication was excellent, David kept me informed throughout the project. I was anxious about having to move all of the furniture and artwork from the walls, but David assured me his team would take care of it and they did. Couldn't be happier. Thank you, David."

"Luis and his crew were professional, on budget and on schedule. I had the exterior of my beach cottage completely repainted along with a deck that needed repair and waterproofing. I was very pleased with the painting and trimming detail especially around the numerous doors and windows of the house. The deck was repaired, new waterproofing installed and surrounding metal railings repainted to my complete satisfaction."

"Hugo went above and beyond to make things perfect for us. I’m a picky person- can drive contractors crazy- Hugo was the most pleasant and courteous contractor I’ve worked with in a long time. We just finished construction on this house, and we had a builder that stoked our money and didn’t finish building. This is our second hone. We have worked with A LOT of bad contractors. I give Hugo and his team my very best rating. Top notch! Quickly realized I had people in my home I could trust and rely on. Extremely professional!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

You can refresh a painted deck by either giving it a thorough cleaning or refinishing the deck altogether. Chipped or faded paint, as well as extensive damage, often calls for a new finish. To do this, remove the original coat of paint with a sander and add either a new coat of paint or a stain to protect the wood below.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

You can apply stain over peeling stain, but it’s not a good idea. Your old stain will get in the way of your new stain bonding to the wood, so you’re likely going to see the same issue again shortly after application. Your best option is to sand off the old stain and clean the surface thoroughly before applying new stain.

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.
