"I don't usually leave reviews for companies, but I just had to for this experience. We hired Desert Winds Painting to paint the outside of our house in Farmington. We've had some really bad experiences with contractors in the past, so we ended up getting 5 bids (they were #5 out of 5) to have our house painted. I really wanted to make sure we were making the right choice. From the moment we requested a quote, I was impressed by the professionalism. During the estimate, it was clear that they are knowledgable in their field, and by the end of the estimate, it was obvious that they were the right choice. The owner, Chris, told me "We take customer service very seriously, and even though we're a small business, we really do our best to provide a big business service with the personal level of a small business". Everything they did from day 1 was a reflection of that. We have a home in Texas that will need painting at some point, and when the time comes, I hope Desert Winds will consider the travel to do it for us. I would give them 10 stars if I could. Thanks Desert Winds!"

"This company did a excellent job of repairing my furnace, although the serviceman did not explain what the problem was beforehand and charged me already. But am happy that my family is warm this winter!"

"Luke was a gift! He responded quickly to my call and was able to start painting two days later. He was professional, knowledgeable, on time and always cognizant of the fact that I was working from home while he was painting. He meticulously painted my entire house and it looks amazing. I highly recommend Luke, you will not be disappointed."

Small jobs welcome

"Recently had our backyard transformed with a new concrete patio. Cameron was professional, arriving on time and ready to work. They walked us through the whole process, making sure we were on the same page with the design and finish we wanted. They were respectful with our space, cleaning up at the end of each day. I would recommend Cameron if you are looking to upgrade your outdoor living space."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Expect to spend around $10,000 to $11,000 to replace a 20-by-20-foot deck. Using high-end materials like composite or exotic hardwoods can drive up the cost, as can custom features and design elements. You can also expect to pay more than average if your deck replacement requires a site evaluation or if you need the work done during the busy season.

PVC decking can get slippery when wet because it’s made from plastic. However, composite and wood decking can also be slippery when wet. It’s best to wear shoes with grippy soles when walking on a wet deck, no matter the material, and to be extra cautious not to slip and fall down.

Whether composite decking is better than wood depends on your priorities, especially regarding budget and maintenance. Composite decking offers superior longevity (30 to 50 years) and durability, and it is low-maintenance, requiring no sanding, staining, or sealing. In contrast, wood decks typically last 10 to 30 years and need refinishing every few years. While the upfront cost of composite is higher than wood, the reduced maintenance can lead to long-term savings. If a lower initial cost is the primary factor, wood is the more affordable choice.

The best base materials for a ground-level or floating deck are typically gravel and crushed stone (also known as landscaping rocks). These options are inexpensive, provide excellent drainage, prevent weeds, and help minimize moisture buildup, which reduces shifting and rotting. For added stability and to evenly distribute the weight, you can use concrete deck blocks or pavers. While more expensive, concrete blocks and pavers offer a sturdier base than gravel or crushed stone alone.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.
