"I made contact with HA on Sunday 07/08/2018. I didn't expect to get a call back the same day but Chris w/ Ryder Electric called and he was able to schedule the next day. He showed up promptly at 7am on 07/09. After explaining my problems with damaged wires (due to squirrels in the attic) he and his helper jumped in and had the problems resolved in no time. I was very impressed with their work attitude, honesty and knowledge. Thanks Ryder!"

"Bill was awesome. He explained all that was done. Chris came out to check on the job. He was very helpful to me. The amount charged versus the quality of work wasn't even close. Would definitely recommend their services."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.

Yes, installing a generator usually increases your property value because buyers are getting the added peace of mind knowing they’ll be able to maintain power through blackouts. In most cases, you should see close to a 100% return on investment (ROI). Keep in mind that home generators usually need a permanent foundation, and installing a concrete slab will likely raise your property taxes slightly.

Portable generators provide backup power for essential appliances during outages and are easy to relocate.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.
