At K&BS, we met with Jeffrey Corkrey, a Design Consultant. We described our kitchen project to Jeffrey and he offered to create design drawings that would allow us to better visualize what we wanted our new kitchen to look like. Jeffrey explained that we could simply pay for the design drawings by themselves, or elect to have 100% of the design cost applied to our choice of cabinetry. As our remodel plan entailed a complete demolition of the existing kitchen, we opted to apply the full cost of the design drawings against the cabinets we ended up ordering from K&BS. To optimize his guidance and advice on our final design plan, Jeffrey visited our home and discussed with us the different choices we could make on cabinetry, countertops and flooring. My wife and I found Jeffrey?s guidance and design drawings most helpful in stepping through the various decisions that needed to be made during our project. In the days that followed we came to rely on K&BS for recommendations on general contractors and on sources for back-splash tile and flooring materials. Through K&BS, we learned of building contractors that K&BS had worked with successfully on local residential kitchen or bathroom remodels. We saw the advantages of hiring a contractor who had previously partnered with K&BS to successfully coordinate kitchen remodel projects like ours. Ultimately, we ended up hiring our project contractor after interviewing 3 recommendations from K&BS. Throughout the kitchen remodeling project, we benefitted first-hand from the efficient coordination between an excellent contractor (Cal Spec Builders) and K&BS, the design company. The on-going communication and coordination between our on-site Cal Spec supervisor and Jeffrey Corkrey from K&BS ensured that the work on our kitchen remodel proceeded without delays and without surprises. A little more than 7 weeks later, my wife and I are enjoying our beautiful new kitchen. We are pleased that we selected Kitchen & Bath Solutions to help us plan our kitchen remodel and to stay throughout the project as an effective partner with our building contractor and ourselves, the homeowners. We enjoyed an excellent working relationship with K&BS/Jeffrey Corkrey and it made all the difference for us. Having an effective design partner transformed a dauntingly large project like a full kitchen remodel into something far less intimidating. It allowed us to concentrate on choices of materials and appliances knowing that we had an overall game plan in place and that our designer had already worked successfully with our contractor on several kitchen projects before ours. We will certainly be considering Kitchen & Bath Solutions in the future for other projects in our home and we do not hesitate to recommend them."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/ca/fountain-valley/kitchen-and-bath-solutions-reviews-182494.htm"},"position":6},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"Cal Spec Builders","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"CA","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Raymond V."},"reviewBody":"After years of postponing it, my wife and I undertook our much-needed kitchen remodel at the start of 2010. Given the expense involved, we made a decision to become as educated as possible about the various aspects of the project. Early on we made an excellent connection with Kitchen and Bath Solutions (“Kand BS”) in Fountain Valley. They provided the design drawings. At our request, Kand BS identified contractors that they have worked with effectively to coordinate successful kitchen remodels. We pared down the list of 8 contractors to 3 and interviewed those companies. We were actually pleased with all 3 interviews but our conversations with Tommy Cole of Cal Spec Builders (formerly Celtic Woodcraft Design) stood out. Apart from having worked effectively with Kand BS in the past, Tommy Cole sold the quality of his team of employees and sub-contractors, their dedication and skills and their track record of pleasing customers. Unexpectedly, Cal Spec Builders list of customer references included the name of someone that I had worked with for many years. My wife and I followed up with this reference and she invited us to her home in Huntington Beach to see first-hand the work in progress that was taking place under the expert oversight of Cal Spec Builders. Our visit with this professional colleague sealed our decision to hire Cal Spec Builders as the general contractor to head our kitchen remodel. Our kitchen remodel involved a complete tear-down and rebuild of our kitchen – everything from city building permits, electrical (including new lighting) to plumbing, dry walling, cabinetry, flooring, countertop and backsplash tile to installing appliances was done in a little more than 7 weeks by Cal Spec Builders and their very conscientious team of employees and sub-contractors. Throughout the process, the on-site project supervisor kept my wife and I informed of what work was to take place on each up-coming work day. All of our questions were answered promptly and honestly and any tweaking that was requested was addressed right away. The Cal Spec Builder team and their sub-contractors worked efficiently and cleaned up at the end of each day to minimize dust and inconvenience to us, the homeowners. In doing our research ahead of the start of our kitchen remodel we heard and read about troubling experiences that some homeowners had working with contractors. We put our trust in the hands of Tommy Cole and his Cal Spec Builders team and they delivered a first-rate kitchen remodel. We are very pleased with the work product, the timeliness, the professionalism, the excellent communication and the integrity. We won’t hesitate to hire Cal Spec Builders again and we don’t hesitate to recommend them to homeowners in the OC area looking for an excellent general contractor who will coordinate and complete a high quality construction project. One starting point to find a local home builder is to collect suggestions from friends and neighbors. However, it’s still wise to do some more research before you hire a builder. Read reviews to supplement any word-of-mouth recommendations. Check sources like Angi that have standards and criteria in place to screen the pros it lists can also help you find more reputable local home builders.
The pros and cons or advantages and disadvantages of building a new house include:
Pros:
It’s all new, so you should have several years before you need to pay for major repairs like a new roof.
It’s under warranty, so many fixes within that warranty period should be covered.
You get to build the house to your specifications.
Cons:
You have to make a LOT of decisions.
You will almost certainly deal with building delays.
It can take a lot of work to stay within your budget.
Building can be more expensive than buying an existing house.
Typically, it’s more affordable to buy an existing home than it is to build a new one. New construction loan interest rates tend to be higher than interest rates for traditional mortgages. Additionally, the cost of materials is likely higher when building a new home than it was when an existing home was built (unless it’s a very new one). You’re also paying for all new appliances, finishes, permits, inspections, and connections for water, gas, and electricity.
The average price per square foot to build a house is about $150 per square foot. Overall, the cost to build a house ranges anywhere from $100 to $500 per square foot, depending on where you build. The primary cost factors include location, size, and style of house you build.
Hiring a contractor to build your home is a big commitment. So be sure to ask as many questions up front as possible. Here are a few questions to ask a prospective home builder:
How many years of experience do you have?
Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?
Do you have worker’s compensation?
How long have you worked with your subcontractors?
How do you handle garbage and waste disposal?
Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?
Do you give free estimates?
Do you offer design services?
How do you handle change orders?
Can you provide at least three references?
Can I see some of the work you’ve done?
From average costs to expert advice, get all the answers you need to get your job done.
