Choose a tool that suits the type of gutters you have. Aluminum or copper gutters can be cut easily with tin snips, aviation snips, hacksaws, or jigsaws (provided they have a metal-cutting blade). Tin snips are used the most often, but they also require the most physical effort. With steel or zinc gutters, you’ll want a stronger tool like a power saw.

While you don't technically need different gutters for metal roofs than you do for other types of roofs, most metal roofs use a half-round or K-style gutter system. On top of that, your gutters will need more brackets than homes that have shingle roofs since the gutters won’t fit as flush against the fascia as they would against traditional roofing systems, where they’re installed to the roof deck.

Avoiding cleaning your gutters can damage not only your gutters and downspouts but also your roof and exterior of your home. Debris buildup in gutters can result in moisture not properly draining. Without a place to go, water and debris can start to eat away at your surrounding roof shingles, attic, insulation, and walls.

Gutter guards can slow down the process of getting clogged gutters, but they won’t technically reduce your chances of it happening. They’re not a permanent solution. Instead, they’re a temporary fix where after some time, leaves and debris will continue to build on top of them and make your gutters less effective. Vinyl typically lasts only 10 to 15 years, while the second most commonly used material, aluminum, lasts an average of 25 years.
