"Elvis is a very solid guy. Very knowledgeable technically, competent, efficient and thorough. He was able to locate and repair a previous imperfect installation by another repairman, so now the doorbell works very well. Elvis is also very personable with a very friendly, pleasant and reassuring manner. He explained everything very carefully and in detail. We went over all of the options. The work was done very well, very successfully, and was of excellent quality. The job was also very reasonably priced. I am highly satisfied. I would highly recommend Elvis to anyone needing electrical repair work and installations."

"I called the Generator Guy because I knew my generator was due for its service but the company I usually use wouldn’t get back to me. Bryan fit me in right away and came out to do the annual service. Fortunately, while he was there, he noticed that two of my hoses were in bad shape, (which he showed me), and he took care of replacing those for me too. I rely on my generator each winter and it gives me great peace to know that it will be ready to go when the power goes out. I highly recommend and will happily use them in the future."

"Gabriel was amazing! He communicated everything he did, explained the fault in the outlet, which another company couldn’t locate. He was professional, courteous and skilled. His price was on point and honest. He wore a mask to ensure there were no concerns about covid. We have him programmed into our phone as “our electrician” and I hope the word travels that he is just THAT good!! Total thumbs UP!!"

"STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. I hesitate to write this review only because it will only make it harder to get Sergio to conduct electrical work for my house. Sergio was fantastic - clearly dedicated to his profession. Because he was replacing the entire panel, came out to look at it beforehand to make sure he had the parts. No unnecessary time was wasted on the day of installation because he knew what was needed. I have already set up for Sergio to come to do more work at the house!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

Generators are safe to use as long as they are installed and operated correctly according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The most critical safety tips are to never use a portable or fuel-powered generator inside an enclosed space due to the risk of lethal carbon monoxide poisoning; always operate it outdoors where fumes can dissipate away from your home. Additionally, never attempt to connect a generator to your home’s electrical panel yourself—hire a professional to ensure the setup meets safety standards. Finally, avoid overloading the generator by not connecting more appliances than it is rated for, as this can damage your equipment or cause a fire.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

The average cost to install a home generator is $5,200, but total costs can range from $500 to $18,000 or more. The final price depends on several factors, including the generator's size, type, brand, fuel source, and the cost of labor and assembly. The generator's size is the most significant cost factor, as units that can power larger homes with higher energy demands cost more.

Cost breakdowns by generator type are typically as follows:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500–$2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000–$6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000–$18,000

To ensure you get the right size unit for your needs without overpaying, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load of your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes from qualified installers to find the best fit for your budget.
