"From the day John came by to give us a quote we found him to be extremely professional and personable.  There were multiple samples to choose from and he was great about answering any questions we had.  We had already had new granite installed and then decided we wanted to change the kitchen cabinetry so he was faced with quite a challenge on how to get the job done without damage to the counters.   He more than met that challenge.  John was here when he said he would be, he was extremely neat, patiently answered our questions, and did a fantastic job in both the kitchen and the laundry room.   The job was completed on schedule and we couldn't be happier with the results.  John is most definitely a true craftsman who loves and takes pride in what he does.  We would not hesitate to recommend John's Furniture and Cabinets."

Cabinet Making FAQs, answered by experts

Typically, a medicine cabinet should be installed about 60 to 72 inches above the floor. This height ensures that it's easily accessible for most individuals while allowing for proper visibility and convenience. However, the ideal height may vary based on individual preferences and the average eye level of the users in your household.

The 1/3 rule is a design guideline used by interior designers and cabinet installers to select appropriately sized pulls for cabinets and drawers. The rule suggests that for a balanced and cohesive look, a cabinet pull should be approximately one-third the height of the cabinet door or one-third the width of the drawer face. This guideline helps create a symmetrical appearance because the human eye tends to follow the length of the pull across the cabinet face.

While the 1/3 rule is a helpful starting point, it is not the only option. If a measurement falls between available pull sizes, it's generally best to size up. For an ultra-contemporary aesthetic, you can also opt for full-width pulls that span the entire drawer.

Custom cabinets made from solid wood tend to last the longest, remaining in good condition for 20 to 50 years. Cabinet lifespan depends on upkeep, the amount of heat and moisture inside the home, and general wear and tear. Popular hardwood options include oak, cherry, maple, walnut, and hickory. Its longevity means that solid wood is more expensive than alternative materials like furniture board, laminate, and plywood. The average cost of solid wood cabinets ranges from $100 to $1,200 per linear foot.

It depends on your carpentry skills and the type of cabinets you purchase. If you have a high level of skill, then it’s most likely going to cost less for you to build your own garage cabinets. It will take longer than purchasing pre-built cabinetry, but it will decrease your overall labor cost.

There are some tips when hiring a cabinet installer that’ll help prepare you to create a new space. When installing new cabinets, keep the following in mind:

  • Hire the same cabinet installer professional to measure, design, and install the cabinets, as opposed to jumping between companies.

  • Discuss what types of cabinets the installer offers, including stock, semi-custom, and custom, to give yourself options.

  • Discuss financing options with your installer, as this project can be expensive depending on your chosen cabinets.

  • Discuss your cabinet installer’s prior experience, including asking for photos of previous projects.
