Small jobs welcome

"Pat took a photo of a deck I sent him that I liked in my neighborhood and was able to draw up plans for my deck. He presented options and was up front about pricing at the initial meeting for a quote. I was indecisive on how the steps would go, colors for the decking materials, and railing. Pat is great at giving variations on what could be built and gives his honest feedback on what will look good. He did the deck in two days, and he is on time and hard working. If you want to hire a small business owner, that does the work himself with one assistant, Pat is your guy. His price came in half price of the larger companies that have a lot of overhead for sales staff, marketing, websites, and “show rooms”. It was a fantastic experience working with Pat on a dream deck I wanted for years. He designs it, builds it, and is there start to finish. With working full time and having two small children, Pat made this home project stress free. I will enjoy my deck for many years to come with Pat’s craftsmanship. He also loves what he does for a living, and you can see the joy that he feels sharing his passion for decks with people trying to create an outdoor space. I’m very happy that I picked Pat Forrest to do my deck. I highly recommend him!"

"Excellently, full stop. There were several projects George evaluated, prepared for and executed over 3+ months: interior painting, total cabinet refinishing, front door resurfacing, fence repair and re-staining, crown moulding, laying down truckloads of bark. He was on time each day, on time with each project and totally transparent re: time and materials. He has lived in Chico 50+ years, which was/is important to me."

"Demo-ed and replaced an exterior deck (approx 350 sq ft). The owner and his crew were simply outstanding in estimating, executing, cleaning-up aspects of this job. One is hard-put to assemble adequate adjectives to describe the quality of his work and the pleasure the whole family has experienced from his exceptional work and attitude. Bravo!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

No, termites do not eat Trex or any other composite decking brand. Termites eat cellulose, of which composite decking like Trex contains very little compared to natural wood. This feature can help justify the higher Trex decking costs if you live in an area with abundant termites.

Materials for a second-story deck must be weather- and rot-resistant, though the specific choices will largely be determined by your budget and style preference. Pressure-treated wood is on the lower end of the price scale, but it can be customized and stained the way you like it. Composite, on the other hand, is pricier for installation and has fewer options for customization, but you’ll save money and time in the long run because it requires little maintenance.

No, it isn’t necessary to skirt a deck, but investing in the cost to install deck skirting can bring more value to your home. Not only does deck skirting make the deck look more complete, but it can also turn otherwise unused space beneath the deck into useful storage space.

The life expectancy of deck boards varies widely based on the material, climate, and maintenance. Untreated wood boards typically last 10 to 30 years with proper care, while pressure-treated boards can last up to 50 years. Hardwoods generally outlast softwoods. Composite boards also tend to last longer than natural wood. Environmental factors like arid or humid climates can shorten a deck's lifespan. To extend the life of wood decking, it's important to consistently clean and seal it to protect against moisture, UV light, and insects.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.
