"We recently had Mega Power Electric Inc install a solar system and panels. The President and provided excellent communication all the way through the process. He even met with us after installation to explain the almost incomprehensible PG&E bill. Although not the least expensive bid, his was competitive and I felt he was as interested in educating me about solar and the various types of panels and inverter systems as he was in selling a system. He demonstrated how the array of panels would meet our energy needs and as opposed to some of the other companies, wasn't selling us more than we needed. We are very satisfied with our solar system and I highly recommended Mega Power Electric Inc."

"Martin installed a seamless glass shower door that was real tricky for my shower. He did an amazing job and I would recommend him for other projects as well because he is very professional and reasonably priced."

"Clint was very professional, polite, on time, & explained all steps to me. He tore down an existing 160 ft. fence, hauled that away, & constructed a beautiful cedar fence. My neighbor & I are very pleased. I would hire him back for more projects. A very nice family to work with."

"The work was done promptly. He used materials (gravel ) without asking permission and damaged the side of the stairs he had to move. I personally would have liked him to tell me he had damaged something and asked permission to use something before doing so. He was friendly, polite, finished the job when he said he would and for the quoted price. I like someone who will put the things they move to do the job, back as they found it. I'm frustrated with this contractor because they didn't address issues with the ramp they recently installed for me. Even though the ramp is still quite new, I noticed it showing signs of weakness and sinking into the ground just a few weeks after installation. I made it clear that I needed a sturdy ramp and was disappointed that he didn't mention any problems during the job. Despite expressing my dissatisfaction and asking for a proper fix, he gave excuses and didn't resolve the issue. Now, I'm thinking about reaching out to them again to deal with this ongoing problem."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Before installing a deck, you must build a base for the deck to rest upon, often made of compacted soil or gravel. While gravel is an optional material, it helps with drainage. Some contractors also recommend installing a weed control membrane, which helps provide a solid foundation for the frame. In the case of an elevated deck, a pro will often lay down a concrete slab as a foundation.

When staining a deck, don’t skip surface prep, avoid staining damp or dirty boards, and don’t apply stain in extreme heat, cold, or wet conditions. Never overload the wood with a stain, as too much can cause tackiness or peeling. Also, don’t forget to test a small area first to ensure the color and finish look right.

The cost to repair a deck is between $900 and $3,500, depending on the cause and extent of the damage. For example, fixing a sinking deck caused by pest damage can cost between $200 and $600, while replacing sinking boards costs between $500 and $4,000.

It is possible to pressure wash your deck, but it’s usually best to leave the work to a professional for two main reasons. First, power washers are expensive, and you can avoid high upfront costs by hiring a deck washing pro instead. Second, you must be careful to use the correct setting to avoid damaging your deck material. You can only clean soft woods like pine with a wide spray and a low pressure; otherwise, the water will leave unpleasant marks on your deck. Hard woods, composite material, and metal can stand up to increasingly higher water pressures.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, particularly for small or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks don’t require digging or pouring. However, their use is regulated by local building codes, and they may not be permitted in areas prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes. Always consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.
