Small jobs welcome

"Although Johnâ s company is 120 miles away from my place, he was able to provide me a very good engineering service for a good size job of opening up four rooms into a huge great room environment. He has many years of engineering experience in wide range of complex jobs with high quality of interaction with customer without much of delay. He is my go to engineer for my next remodeling project on other property in near future. Tsbiker Hollister, CA"

"We LOVE how our house turned out! Eric Pennachio did such a great job maximizing our space (we were limited to just 1200 sq ft). Everyone who comes into our house is shocked because it feels so big! 11 foot ceilings, giant windows perfectly placed for our views. Good sized bedrooms and bathrooms! And he did what we asked when we specified how much we love hosting and wanted a bigger hosting space. The kitchen and living room are all open which makes the house feel so much bigger. 10/10 recommend!"

"I have been very fortunate to work with Preston on 3 projects and found him to be very professional, thorough and complete tasks in a very timely manner. He works well with both clients, contractors and designers and developed a feel for the goals of the builds/design very quickly. All of our projects have been very different in design but Preston had no problem adapting to the design criteria of each. I would definitely recommend him."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can build over a stump if the roots are no longer alive. Living roots will continue to grow and may damage your new construction over time. Similarly, you should also remove rotting stumps because they may continue to attract pests and even cause new structures (especially those made from wood) to decompose as well.

Yes, water damage can affect your walls' structural integrity. If the water or moisture sits on the walls for an extended period, it can weaken the drywall, plaster, wood framing, and other materials supporting the wall. That's why it's critical to dry out the area as soon as you notice it.

You should pick steel for your new support beam for a few reasons. While steel is more expensive than other materials, such as laminated veneer lumber or glulam, it offers the following benefits:

  • Fire-resistant

  • Unaffected by pests

  • Longer-lasting

  • Stronger against water damage (when galvanized against rust)

No, a structural engineer is not the same as a builder. A structural engineer is an expert in all things related to the structural integrity of a building. The structural engineer is responsible for calculating the correct materials in terms of load-bearing capacity and overall structural safety. Structural engineers do not perform the actual building of the house or other structures. Rather, the builder executes the plans and designs specified by the structural engineer.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.
