"I had a difficult situation with unfinished work and I proceeded to get estimates from this site. I chose Michael because of the fairness of his price and the calm, confident manner in which he assessed the situation. I needed new wood windows and doors installed, hardware affixed, exterior patching and exterior and interior painting done. He was timely, friendly and diligent and the work was excellent. I would heartily recommend him and intend to use him again when I need carpentry/construction repairs."

"Dante provided outstanding customer service and was knowledgeable, patient and very professional. We really did not want to purchase another iron window, just needed custom made brackets and welded to the iron window. Dante did a great job. Overall my wife and I are very pleased with our experience with L.A. Iron Works. Thank you HomeAdvisor for recommending this company. Gus & Judith"

"Mello Welding is terrific. I received a call back and a quick estimate. The work to cut out a rusty section of railing and weld a new section in place was professionally completed on time. I really appreciated how quickly they responded. Very satisfied."

"Provider was a bit late but he had called earlier explaining he'd be late, so this wasn't a big deal.  Work seemed fine based on what provider told me he did.  I didn't go up on the roof and no pictures provided, but as noted, I went by what the provider said, who seemed experienced.  The poor aspect was that they were supposed to give me an estimate for a follow-up seal job.  I spoke to them on the phone three times to give them two different email addresses, to send me the estimate.  I never got the estimate; I checked my spam filters for both email addresses.  I also emailed them through their website explaining how I hadn't gotten the estimate notwithstanding prior communications.  I got no response to that.  I guess there could be some technical / email glitch, but as noted, I gave them two different email addresses and I checked my spam folders and got nothing and spoke to them several times.  They could have at least mailed me a hard copy of the estimate based on my last communication with them that I hadn't received their estimate.

Welding questions, answered by experts

Your typical household tools will not cut a metal pipe. To cut a metal pipe, you’d need more specialized tools like a pipe cutter or circular saw. Do not attempt to use these tools without taking proper safety precautions and wearing safety gear. It’s usually safer to let a pro cut a metal pipe, especially if you’re not confident in your skills with a heavy-duty saw.

You should not do your own welding unless you have the proper training and experience. Most home electrical systems can only handle MIG welding, which creates weaker bonds than TIG welding and won’t work on certain metals or metal thicknesses. Both welding forms usually require the use of shielding gas, which can be dangerous to store at home. Additionally, welding machines create temperatures of over 3,000 degrees, and the sparks can blind you if you don’t have the proper equipment. As such, it’s usually better to hire a professional welder for your welding projects.

Cutting rectangular ductwork requires careful measurements and the right technique. Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark the cutting lines accurately. Tin snips are excellent for straight cuts on smaller ducts. For more extensive or thicker rectangular ducts, a reciprocating saw with a metal-cutting blade is effective.

Ensure the duct is well-supported and secure while cutting to prevent wobbling and maintain precision. After cutting, use a metal file to smooth any sharp edges, ensuring safety during installation.

Yes, you can use a saw to cut metal pipes. The best saw to use is a reciprocating saw, but even a fine-tooth hacksaw can get the job done. No matter which saw you use to cut metal pipes, wear protective gear, like work gloves, safety goggles, and ear plugs. Apply a firm, steady pressure to the tool, and always ensure the pipes are secured so they don't move while you make the cuts.

Welders use a variety of methods in their trade. Different types of welding are better suited for different purposes and contexts. For example, stick welding is a versatile form suitable for most metals and alloys. The most common types of welding include:

  • Stick welding: $100–$1,000

  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding: $250 and up

  • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding: $250 and up

  • Gas welding: $150 and up

  • Forge welding: $15–$25 per hour
