"Alex installed a sub panel in my garage to allow for 240v power so I can use some heavier duty power tools. His service was excellent and professional without exception. Alex helped me understand what I needed and offered cost effective and efficient solutions. I got 3 quotes for the work and Alex’s was the most reasonably priced and detailed, which I very much appreciated because it showed he put real thought into the plan, compared to other quotes that clearly just ball parked labor and materials. Beyond that he called out things that the others missed, like NOT drilling through a support beam to get conduit inside when a less destructive and safer alternative was available. He also managed the work in a way to minimize power disruption to the house, which was important considering my wife and i WFH. Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:
Portable generator:
2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.
4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.
8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.
Partial to whole-house generator:
20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

As long as they have enough fuel, whole-house generators can run for weeks at a time (400 to 500 hours) without suffering too much wear and tear. However, this type of extensive use isn’t ideal if you want to extend the life of your generator.
Two important points. First, some generators may need you to periodically check oil levels every day or so and refill as necessary for safe operation. Second, if your generator uses a fuel tank, keep it regularly full so it doesn’t suddenly shut off. Unlike other fuels, natural gas is delivered through underground pipes, making outages extremely rare and less likely to be affected by the elements. As long as the area isn’t prone to earthquakes, they offer an unlimited supply of natural gas that doesn’t degrade over time or require storage in tanks.
You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.
