Small jobs welcome

"Michael from Ceilings Etc. was very professional and friendly during the entire project of popcorn ceiling removal, which included giving me an honest and competitive bid, masking entire rooms in plastic to keep dust and debris contained, removing the popcorn ceiling, resurfacing the Sheetrock, texturing it to match my walls, and priming/painting the new ceilings. The final product are gorgeous new ceilings in six rooms. Clean up was also excellent. I highly recommend this company for popcorn ceiling removal and any interior painting project you might have. I got three bids on our project and Ceilings Etc. tied for low bid. What sold me was the thorough explanation of the project and the minimal amount of work the homeowner has to do moving furniture and removing ceiling light fixtures and fans. They virtually did it all. Thanks Mike!"

"Joaquin was awesome, and I highly recommend him. He was able to remove the popcorn ceiling in five rooms and paint the interior of a 1600 sq house. He did this all in six days. We did our final walkthrough and everything looked amazing. Five stars for sure."

"We had Israel, Gabriel and Kelly take off the popcorn on our ceilings and then re-surface them. One room had a structural issue and Israel repaired it and continued on to the finish work. All three of these people are professional and caring about the project and a delight to work with. Highly recommend!"

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

The average popcorn ceiling removal costs around $2,000, but prices can range from $950 to $3,100, depending on the size, accessibility, and whether or not there’s asbestos or lead paint.

We don’t recommend DIYing this project to save money, but you can DIY the prep work to speed things up. Consider removing furniture, ceiling lights, and other fixtures before the workers arrive on site. To be extra helpful, cover any remaining belongings with plastic tarps and secure them with tape.

Textured ceilings add visual interest and personality to a room, breaking away from the flat, uniform look of smooth ceilings. They are also practical, as the texture helps to hide imperfections, making them ideal for older homes or spaces prone to wear and tear. Textured ceilings come in a variety of patterns, giving homeowners the flexibility to choose a style that complements their design preferences, whether they want something subtle or more intricate. Additionally, certain textures can help with sound absorption, making rooms quieter and more comfortable.

Using a paint sprayer is the most effective method for painting popcorn ceilings, and it's why professionals choose spraying versus rolling paint. The sprayer simplifies the challenges of painting the texture. However, we don’t recommend that DIYers try to use a sprayer indoors as it could make a significant mess. Using a paint roller on a ladder is the easiest option that results in much less mess.

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”
