"It's a pretty decent system, I think. They send you the pieces and you install them yourself, which is pretty easy. The only real problem I have is that one sensor is too far away from the panel...or there's some interference, and they haven't been able to fix that. It's an interior door, so it's not the end of the world, just a little annoying. Their customer service is pretty good though. Nice, smart customer service people on the other end, very polite and helpful."

Chimney Inspection FAQs, answered by experts

No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

If your homeowners insurance company has required that you get a roof inspection, they’ll cover the cost. Roof inspections are actually quite common with home insurance policies, as the insurer needs to understand the risk they’re taking on. However, if you get a roof inspection of your own volition, you’ll need to pay for it out of pocket.

Yes, cleaning removes harmful elements that contribute to rot or degradation, extending the roof's lifespan and averting costly future repairs.

Roof leaks can go undetected for months or even years. A smaller leak that doesn’t cause visible signs in your home’s living area may allow water intrusion for a long time before you notice it. The longer a leak goes undetected, the worse the damage will be, so it’s important to frequently check for signs of a leak to keep a small problem from getting much bigger.

In most cases, yes, you will need to be home while your roof inspector checks your roof. The inspector will be able to complete the exterior assessment without input from you, but they will also need access to your attic space to look for signs of leaking, like pest infestation, water stains, mold growth, and visible holes leading to the exterior. They will also check the roof trusses, rafters, and supports to confirm their structural integrity. Roof inspections usually take between two and three hours, so plan accordingly.
