"Southern Outdoor Solutions, LLC did a wonderful job completely redoing our backyard! My personal favorite is the new hangout area with a fire pit and beautiful lattices. We had it ALL done, sump pump to cover drainage issues, concrete back porch extention, garden beds and borders, new Sod laid, rock laid, firepit and seating area with pavers & block, large backyard pergola, fencing around our yard, and separating both side yards. They even handled all the lighting, which makes the space perfect day or night. We are beyond pleased with their outstanding customer service, the speed of their work, and the quality they delivered. Thank you for transforming our backyard into a space we truly love!"

"They did a good job. I was just hoping it would stop my wood floors from creaking but they are worse. Overall believe the work done will be good for the house support though"

"We were looking to nstall crown moulding but i didn't have the tools or expeience to tackle the job. With the cost of the materials today its not something you want to have a lot of mistakes with. I reached out to D&M and had them come out to give me a quote. A few days later and everything looks great. All the corner joints are tight and it has made a huge difference for us. I plan on calling them again when we replace our cabinets."

"We contacted Go Pro and actually got a response! There's something you don't see much anymore. We needed a garage door installed in an out building. Go Pro owner Chuck said he could open and frame the door opening, and connected us to a subcontractor who ordered and installed the door. We paid a combined invoice for both sets of contractors. Everyone involved did professional level work, including following up, quick completion, and a surprisingly thorough clean up of the work site. Overall, it wasn't a big install as construction projects go, but I feel that did not effect the quality of workmanship or attentiveness of service. These days it's hard to find high quality, trustworthy contractors--especially for us being new to the Mobile area. In our first year in the Mobile area we've hired some doozies. Lastly, Chuck is well connected--so far he has put us on to a mason and a roofer with more contacts available for projects outside his scope of expertise. We feel fortunate to have met Chuck. We have a garage door. And our boat finally is under a roof!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

While carpenters and woodworkers perform similar tasks, their focus differs. A carpenter is typically responsible for the structural woodwork involved in construction, such as framing, installing sheathing, hanging kitchen cabinets, and installing trusses. In contrast, a woodworker handles more intricate and custom projects, like building custom furniture, installing wainscoting, and creating detailed interior trim and moldings. Based on these definitions, many woodworkers can perform the tasks of a carpenter, but it's always best to discuss your specific project with a professional to ensure they have the necessary skills.

While you can perform many routine home maintenance jobs yourself, it’s often a good idea to bring pros in for certain tasks. HVAC maintenance, fireplace and chimney inspections, foundation repairs, and roof inspections and repairs should be handled by professionals who know what to look for and can safely perform repairs. You may also find it helpful to hire a local house cleaning service to help with deep cleaning.

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.
