While no-VOC paints don’t contain the chemical compounds that are toxic when they’re outgassed, they can still have an odor. This is because odors can come from other chemicals in the paint that aren’t classified as VOCs. Again, ventilation is key, especially if you plan to sleep in the room on the same day as you paint.

The best type of paint to apply to stainless steel is epoxy paint. This material is also popular for painting over concrete and other floor surfaces because it creates a tough, durable surface. Keep in mind that the epoxy paint curing time is three to seven days, but refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for specific wait times.

If you’re repainting with the same sheen, it’s possible to apply satin paint over satin. However, if you’re reducing the glossiness and using a flatter paint, you should sand first to take off some of the sheen. Sanding will also help the next coat of paint stick to the wall better, so it’s a good idea, even if you’re not changing the sheen.

Rather than learning how to repaint a room in its entirety, you might want to touch up areas that are showing worn paint or damage. Learning how to match the paint color already on the walls can be challenging, though. If you don’t have any of the original paint, your local hardware store might have a record in your account of your past paint color purchases. Otherwise, remove and take a small piece of painted drywall to the hardware store to do paint matching. Test the new paint in a hidden area to be sure it matches.
