Yes. You should insulate behind shower walls to help stave off heat loss. In other words, it’ll keep the shower or tub from getting too cold. Nothing ruins bath time like stepping into a freezing cold bathroom. Not insulating and air sealing the walls behind the shower allows heat to escape easily, which opens the area up to the elements.

While it is possible to purchase a home with vermiculite insulation, you should have it tested for asbestos, and ensure proper containment if asbestos is present. If asbestos is present, you will want to hire a professional to remove it, ideally before you move in.
