Consider it a blessing that it is not often that you need to talk with a roofing contractor, because roofing can be an expensive project. So, when you do need to talk with one, here are some facts to consider. Whether you are working on a new project, or re-roofing an existing structure, there are many choices of materials, also many choices of roofing contractors. While you may not be knowledgeable in roofing, ask to see samples of the materials to be used. There are different materials, grades, colors and styles; and therefore, many different price ranges. So, ask questions and get knowledgeable! Keep in mind that the most critical element is GOOD WORKMANSHIP, so your selection of a contractor is of the utmost importance. Choose a licensed company with a good reputation in the community. Ask them for references, proof of insurance, what types of roofing they recommend and why. If it is an existing structure, ask if the old roof comes off. Get specific start and end dates, and get it in writing. No reputable contractor will be offended if you ask for this information. Be sure to understand the warranty’s coverage – and if the warranty is transferable (a definite plus if you plan to sell soon). The warranty, however, is only as good as the contractor. Most of all, don’t let a “low bid” be the deciding factor in your decision. It’s great if that happens to be a part of the deal, but quality installation at a fair price should be your utmost goal. One last note, regrettably, approximately 80 percent of all roofing contractors are out of business in less than two and a half years – so what good is a 20 year warranty when you can’t find your contractor in case of problems? I have 25 years of experience and can furnish references from MANY LOCAL FIRMS and residential customers. Midian Roofing will appreciate the opportunity to bid on your project. T.K. Classic Copper Works uses time honored German copper smith techniques handed down from father to son and passed on to our highly skilled artisans. We specialize in the fabrication of custom copper & bronze products and other metal specialties. WE DO NOT OFFER REPAIR SERVICES OF ANY KIND. Additional phone number - (888) 908-5339.

"Ordered and paid for custom awning that was to take 5 weeks. Its now been 16 weeks and still waiting. Owner is at best noncommunicable and at worst, rude. I'm now wondering if this is a scam and not a real business."

Chimney Caps questions, answered by experts

During the framing process, builders connect the roof to the walls with materials, including metal connectors, plywood panels, and wood blocks. These roof-to-wall connections are important and provide weatherproofing, noise and temperature insulation, protection against pests, and home integrity. The type of connector and method used will vary, depending on your home’s construction and needs, and each has pros and cons in terms of cost, noise insulation, longevity, and reliability. Talk with your home or roofing contractor about the best connectors for your roof and walls, and what they recommend for your home.

The best material to sheath a roof will depend on your budget and if you require the strength of more robust materials. For most homes, the added strength is unnecessary, and oriented strand board, or OSB, makes sense. It’s inexpensive and robust enough for most roof types. Another popular but slightly more expensive option is plywood.

A gambrel roof and a mansard roof are similar in that they are both hipped roofs, meaning they have double slopes—one steep and one more gradual above the steep slope. The difference is that a gambrel roof has a double slope on only two sides of the structure, whereas a mansard roof has a double slope on all four sides.

Fall is considered the best time of year to fix a roof because temperatures are moderate, and the weather is drier, making repairs safer. Summer can also be a good option, but extreme heat can make shingles too soft and difficult to work with. Spring is a popular time for repairs following damage from winter storms, but frequent rainfall can slow down progress.

The average cost of a metal roof for a 2,000-square-foot home is $11,700, but your price can range from $12,000 to $90,000, depending on the number of stories you have, your roof design, and the specific metal you choose. Reach out to a metal roofing company to get an accurate estimate customized for your home.
