The fine people at Alaska's Best Heating and plumbing came over the day I first called and gave me the bad news of having to replace the entire unit. We are a family owned and operated, full service plumbing, heating, thawing and septic pumping company with over 140 years of combined knowledge and experience. We offer commercial, residential, new construction, remodel, service work and energy efficiency upgrades. Our heat technicians are certified and licensed to work on all makes and models from System 2000 to Toyo. Our plumbers, apprenctices and technicians do everything from completely plumb-in houses and office buildings to remove clogs and clean and inspect pipes.

"I called three months ago to have an expansion tank and zone switches replaced on my boiler. They did not bring out any parts in order to repair. So they come out a second time to do the job. Was it fixed? No, zone switch failed and they left the water off for the basement. Third time they came out they admitted the expansion tank was bad, finally, replaced it, added some glycol to further run up the bill. And now again we are without heat. No problems with furnace for 6+ years until GPS came out and since it has been nothing but problems. Stupidly tried a fourth time to get them to come fix it, but the receptionist was rude and not wanting business. So, I give up. Do not give these folks your business, you will be sorry. Go somewhere else."

Using less toilet paper is the easiest way to prevent future clogs. Also, avoid flushing sanitary products, thick paper towels, or hair down the toilet. If you’ve been using a brick in the tank to reduce the water used to flush the toilet, take it out immediately. Bricks will eventually fall apart and clog your toilet drain. Keeping your toilet lid closed also helps avoid future clogs.

There are many signs to look for if you suspect the sump pump is clogged. First, check the discharge pipe and around the sump pump for visible clogging. You may also notice flooding in the basement around the sump pit or larger objects, such as rocks, in the sump pit. Listen for loud noises, such as a screeching sound, to flag a clog.

It can take anywhere from half an hour to a few hours to fix a main line clog, depending on the cause and severity of it. The job should not take more than a day to complete. Keep in mind that the main line is not the same as your home’s sewer lines (which connect to the main line and run to your house). Your city is responsible for any clogs or damage to the main line itself.

Pouring hot water down a drain can help unfreeze drainpipes, but it may not thaw a frozen water pipe that is completely blocked further down in your plumbing. In some circumstances, it can cause more ice buildup. You may need to use another method, like a space heater or hot towel. If you use boiling water to thaw a drainpipe, make sure your pipes can handle the heat. Over time, boiling water can damage plastic pipes.

There are a few ways to unclog a toilet without a plunger. Break up the clog with homemade solutions containing soap, vinegar, and baking soda, or simply let hot water spend some time in the drain. You can also use a two-liter soda bottle filled with water to push pressurized water into the pipe to dislodge the debris (see the steps above).
