After William Burch moved
to his River Oaks townhome, his possessions never quite moved in. Instead, his cluttered garage became a way station for many of his belongings, including an “office” set up on an ironing board. “I did a bunch of remodeling, and everything from storage was in the garage,” the Angie’s List member says. “I was living
out of my garage.”

Burns turned to professional organizer Ruth Ellen Huebner, owner of Get Organized! in Houston. “It’s good to have an independent person come in and not get bogged down,” says Burch, who paid about $330 for four hours of work. “They kick you in the teeth and say, ‘Why are you keeping this or that?’”

Whether it’s unearthing bills, organizing pantry spices or giving kids a place to stash their toys, professional organizers in Houston say that partnering with homeowners to combat household clutter leads to happier lives. “Once you’re in an environment that’s cluttered, your mind can’t focus,” says Southeast Houston’s Neitra Blair, owner of highly rated Organizing Lifestyles and a vice president for the Houston chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers. Blair says people end up in a cluttered state because of life-changing events, such as marriage, birth, death or a new career. “Organization is put on the ‘I’ll get to it later’ list,” she says.
