Common Dryer Service Questions

Like cars, the most expensive part of a dryer is any electrical component, specifically the control board. For newer dryers, this single part, excluding the labor required to replace it, can easily be worth more than half the price of a new unit. While you can sometimes source these more expensive pieces (ask a contractor friend if they have any) when the control board is shot, it’s common to sell the unit for parts and replace it with a new one.

Dryers work by pumping hot air into a drum which spins, tumbling the clothes and ensuring the hot air can reach all the fabric. When a dryer belt malfunctions, the drum will either squeak loudly or the drum simply won’t spin. Sometimes this just requires adding some tension to the belt but because the belt itself is only around $10, it makes more sense to just swap the part for a new one.

The best material to use for a dryer vent is rigid metal ducts. In some locations, they’re the only ones the building code allows. The best vent caps will keep bugs, rodents, and the weather out. Look for solid construction, a tight-fitting weather flap, and a cage or screen to keep pests from entering.

You can use a regular set of scissors to cut your dryer vents just like you would if you had tin snips. However, make sure it’s not a set of scissors you care a lot about, as the tin material is likely to damage the scissors while you’re cutting. Tin snips aren’t too expensive; you can usually find them for between $6 and $15 at your local home improvement store.

Any clothing or materials with oil, gas, or grease are considered highly flammable and should not be placed in your dryer. Instead, try to air dry them after washing. Other items to avoid include beach attire, since sand can get into every nook and cranny of the dryer, as well as into future loads of laundry.
