Common Wood Fence Service Questions

The cost to build a new wood fence ranges from $1,700 to $4,420 on average, so keeping your current fence intact for as long as possible is worth it. Additionally, repairing a wood fence is considerably less expensive than replacing it. Repairing a wood fence costs about $100 to $500, and only $100 to $300 to do it yourself. However, remember that a permit may be necessary to repair a fence in specific locations, so it may make your life easier (and cost less) to hire a local wood fence builder to get the job done.

There are several ways to make a wooden fence more visually appealing and keep it that way for years to come.

  • Treat the fence with a wood sealant to protect it against the elements. It’s recommended to reseal a fence every two to three years, but if you live in a harsh climate, you may want to do it more frequently than that.

  • Restore the fence if it’s old, corroding, or fading. That includes cleaning it and making small repairs where needed.

  • Paint the fence in a color that you like, whether that’s a simple white or more vibrant option. Fences usually need to be repainted every one to three years.

  • Decorate the fence with planters, string lights, birdhouses, mirrors, shutters, and more.

Bleach can damage a wooden fence if misused. It can break down the wood’s chemical structure, leading to discoloration or damage. To prevent these issues, dilute bleach before using it on a wood fence. Mix one quart of bleach with every gallon of water, applying in sections to avoid overuse or drying.

You should also spot-test an area first to double-check your mixture and application.

To replace old wooden fence posts, you will need to completely remove the old ones from the ground first. You can either use a jack and chain or a fulcrum and lever to remove them. Alternatively, you can simply dig the old fence posts out of the ground. With the old fence posts completely removed, place the new fence posts in the holes, level them, and pour new concrete to secure the new fence post in place. Attach the existing fence rails to the new fence post.

Fences made out of redwood, cedar, or pressure-treated pine are the most durable. These materials can last anywhere between 15 to 40 years so long as they are properly maintained. Make sure to clean your fence regularly and pressure wash once a year. After pressure washing, apply a sealant and/or fresh paint to keep it looking fresh.
