The work crew Salem, Brandon, Jeremy and Ricky did a great job and were very courteous, diligent, and professional during this project. Even the neighbors walking by commented how courteous the work crew was. Even though this was the first time this team had installed a large block retaining wall, they did an excellent job completing the work and ensuring the excavation, drainage, installation, backfill, and final grading were completed per the Geotechnical Engineers design. The foreman Jacob even moved a couple of small trees for us at the beginning of the project which is much appreciated! If you’ve never used a sprayer and don’t have the time to learn, using a roller or brush will get you closer to your dream results.
You should wait three to six months after you buy it to paint pressure-treated wood. It needs time to dry from the chemicals applied to it. The paint will not adhere to the treated wood as well if it’s still wet from chemicals. To test the wooden boards, drip water onto them. If the wood absorbs the water, it’s ready for painting. If the water beads up, it’s not dry enough to paint yet. You can build your deck or fence while the treated wood is still wet, but you’ll need to paint it later.
The best type of paint to use for chain link fences is an oil-based paint. Oil-based paints are durable and will withstand the elements well. Search for an oil-based paint with rust protection and aluminum flakes to further protect the longevity of the fence.
It typically takes three to five days to stain a fence, though most of that time is spent—literally—watching paint dry. The main issue is that you can’t stain a wet fence because the stain won’t sink into the porous grain of the wood. That means you’ll need to wait 24 hours to stain your fence after you wash it and 12 to 24 hours between each coat. Most people spend about an hour staining per 10 to 20 linear feet.
Applying a topcoat sealer is not required, but it will keep the stain from fading over time. This is particularly important if the stain imparts a color or varnish. If you’re staining exterior wood, you should apply a sealant or finish to prevent weather-related issues down the line. Also, stained wood that lacks a seal won’t look as clean and fresh. A clear topcoat will give it the professional result you want.
