A couple more weeks passed with no reply until last week a crew came to my door and in very short order made the repair at no cost to me. "We have an old 1930's house that needed a large chimney repointed and cap replaced. Rod at Layman Masonry and his team were referred to us by our roofer, Kelvin Howard, for doing good work. We contacted Rod for a quote, and he came out the very next day to quote a price that was good considering the amount of work to be done. Rob and his team are insured and were courteous and friendly throughout the project. They showed up on time and maintained a clean job site. The project consisted of grinding out and replacing the old mortar, a new chimney cap and to put two coats of paint back on the chimney. The project was completed in 4 days despite rain every other day. We were very happy with the work done and will use Rod again in the future."

First, you’ll want to remove rust stains with a scouring pad. Next, you’ll need to thoroughly clean the galvanized gutters with hot water and mild dish soap—once dry, wipe down the gutters with turpentine (available for around $10). Finally, apply metal primer followed by a coat or two of high-quality exterior latex paint. You can also hire a painting company near you to tackle painting galvanized gutters.

You can paint your gutters to look copper by using a copper-colored liquid or spray paint. To give your gutters a shiny appearance, choose a rust or metallic paint and primer. This option is a cost-effective way to achieve the coveted look of real copper gutters without spending the money. Be sure to choose a high-quality exterior paint that is designed to withstand the elements.

If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.
